You think Veg Oil isn't viable

A friend of mine took up a engineering project at Boise State University. He along several other students took a P-Pumped 5.9 and stuffed in a tube steel racing chassis and wrapped it in a relatively stock bodied 1998 Chevy S10. They did this with very little funding and have gotten the attention of the WORLD!!! They were even invited to attend the Washington DC autoshow!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present Team Greenspeed! The World's fastest vegetable oil powered vehicle.

155.331mph

Keep it up Dave Schenker and Team Greenspeed!

Are they doing WVO or bio diesel?

And who said it's not viable? I burn it all the time!:c:

Straight, fresh veg oil.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing Tommy. And how the F do you get it embedded like that???

Mdub, we have to use new oil according to the rules. Last year it didn't matter because it wasn't an official fuel, but we got new stuff donated, so we ran it. Because of our efforts last year, we were able to get new, USDA Food grade veg oil added as an official fuel to the competition though, so we will be running that again. Better for the engine anyway.

Just copied and pasted the link. They have an add on here that makes it embed like that.

There's less BTUs in veggie oil than diesel too, so slightly less power. Also burning unheated veggie will result in problems.

You realize the point of this thread was to show that there developments happening to make it more possible to use veg oil. Maybe less BTU's. But it is DEFINITELY less money to foreign countries!!

I've been burning WVO since 2008, I know it can be used, and used succesfully. I have buddies who have put over 100k miles on WVO on their trucks.

I think what they're doing is awesome, don't get me wrong. Congrats to those involved.

I remember this truck popping up on the vegistroke board a while back. What was the reason for it only doing 155mph? That seems slow for what it is, but I guess I'm not really sure about the regulations etc.

So this truck was run on WVO, start-up, shutdown, the whole thing? There will be problems with parts running unheated WVO. Tried and trued.

I'm interested to learn more!:c:

The use diesel to start it. They pre-warm the Veg Oil.

They use fresh Veg oil. The Timing association actually created rules after last year to specifically address Veg oil powered vehicles. There are required to use fresh Veg oil.

They JUST built this truck last year. They had to go through a lot of requirements for licensing. Also a month before the first run at Bonnievile there was absolutely no truck. This was all done as an Engineering project. Part of the reason for the lower speed was they found there was a bind up in the throttle linkage that prevented full travel.

They are moving forward and are now shooting for 200+mph.

Awesome, thanks for the update. Pretty cool setup, and glad to see they're shooting for a higher MPG. A few of the woodchucks on the vegistroke board had thought about slapping something together to crush the record haha.

You should post this up over there too, WVO Diesel Conversion | SVO Grease Conversion | Ford Vegistroke Powerstroke | Biodiesel Conversion the premier WVO burning systems...

I'd be really interested to learn more about the WVO system used here and how it's set up.

Again, thanks for sharing with us! :c:
