Aviation fuel

i have a question about Aviation fuel. Can it be reused for the duramax?

Red_Rattler 05-28-2012 04:56 PM

I wouldnt and a friend who owns a construction company, his kid burned his cummins up doing the same thing since he buys the exp bunker fuel from the local airport for his construction equipment but he didnt know what he was doing and just put it in the truck straight

dmaxjenn 06-05-2012 03:49 PM

but it works on diesel engines for tractors? just not trucks.. ok good thought...

Jet fuel is doable, BUT it is more like kerosene which means very little lubricity. I would use it in an older diesel with ash free 2 cycle oil added, but not in a newer common tail engine.

When I say older, I mean something you don't have a lot invested in. My 250,000+ mile 1982 Mercedes has run on all kinds of stuff over the last 5 years. Keep in mind I paid $1500 for the car.

.ok add oil gotcha... ash free noted.. 2cyle.. thanks for the info.

Avgas is 100LL (100 octane Low Lead) and is like gas that was sold back in the early 80's here in the states.

Jet fuel, as stated is almost like Kerosene....

Eddiebuntain 06-05-2012 07:26 PM

Is it avgas or jet fuel? Jet fuel would be diesel"ish", add some lube and pull the pin. Avgas closer to gasoline, better for the lawnmower or something. $.02:w2:

I work on AH-1W Cobra's and UH-1Y Hueys and we run JP-8 in the aircraft and run it in the trucks, tugs, and generators in Afghanistan. They were killing IP's on the trucks running that stuff through it but the smaller motors didnt seem to mind it. Like stated above it has very low lubricity and amount sulfar can cause problems in todays engines and pumps. It is also going to burn hotter and giving you higher EGT's. On the civilian side you are probably going to get your hands on JET A which is pretty much the same thing as JP-5 and JP-8 it is used in most boeing aircraft. If I didnt care much about my diesel I might run it with a quart of 2 stroke oil.

dmaxjenn 06-06-2012 01:52 PM

Its Jet A.. We just got some stickers.:tu:. I was thinking about the older diesels, they have a few 04's ~ I think there keeping one of them!
They just got three of the New 2012.s duallys~ pretty sweet looking trucks......can wait to see the new trailers there getting to haul the jet fuel.

All about the look when in this company. Everything Red.

Pretty sure warrenty would be voided if they used jet fuel in the new diesels.. wonder how that DEF would work out with that type of heat..:humm:

Stay away from jet fuel- we have a thread somewhere.

Even if the US-military uses it widely for trucks to simplify logistics it is not advisable to do so.
Mech's do complain about killed IP's and fuel pumps.

German military allows the use of it when: no diesel is available or the history of the fuel is not clear.
But:
2 stroke oil must be used by order!
It is not allowed for high pressure pumps like the CP3 or common rail diesels.

Bottom line:
Stay away. It's a question of available money and resources. We don't have both of them.

Some knowledge about jet fuels JP9, JP8 JP5 and aviation A1:

Physical and Chemical Properties of Military Fuels - National Academies Press

Jet fuels and diesel fuel marine (DFM) are complex mixtures of hydrocarbons produced by distillation of crude oil.
They contain hundreds of hydrocarbons as well as many additives.
The actual composition of any given fuel varies depending upon source of the crude oil, refinery processes, and product specifications.
The hydrocarbons in jet and diesel fuels are less volatile than those in gasoline.

JP-5 is a high-flash-point jet fuel developed by the Navy. JP-5 is a specifically refined type of kerosene consisting of C9-C16 paraffins (53%), cycloparaffins (31%), aromatics (16%), and olefins (0.5%). The aromatic content of JP-5 might vary from less than 2.5% to greater than 22% by volume.
The benzene content of JP-5 is typically less than 0.02% (Dollarhide, 1992), and a small amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons might be present in JP-5.

Because water contamination in aviation fuels is a serious problem, a fuel-system icing inhibitor is added to the fuel to eliminate the formation of ice in aircraft systems.

JP-8 is similar to commercial jet A-1 fuel.
JP-8 was developed for the Air Force to provide a safe kerosene-based jet fuel that would still have adequate reliability and an acceptable freezing point.
DFM is a blend of diesel fuel that is basically the same as kerosene to which high-boiling-point fractions and high-boiling-point residual oils have been added.

Diesel fuels consist primarily of C9-C20 hydrocarbons.
For DFM, these are roughly 13% paraffins, 44% aromatics, and 44% naphthalenes. DFM might also contain less than 10% polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

In considering the potential toxicity of the fuel vapors, it is important to note that many compounds in the fuel do not exist in the vapors (Bishop, 1982).
The toxicity of the more-volatile fractions of the fuel is considered in this report and not the toxicity of the total fuel.
The composition of the vapors from the three fuels under consideration are expected to be similar since the fuels are made by mixing kerosene with different amounts of low-boiling-point distillates.

good read! thanks for that info, ill pass it on.:tu:

here on the navy base, we use all the old jet fuel from f-18s in our forklifts and trucks... never had any problems

I would think by adding some waste oil that might cure the lube issue with the jp-8 or the like of jet /av gas .... i have ran gas + waste oil and had good results... did it with a gas can just to see the diff.... definatly rev faster and cleaner ... too much gas and it pings a bit... too much oil and its a smoker on wheels..... around 3 gallons of gas to 1 gallon of waste oil seems not too bad.. 87 octane used in my experimenting .... for notations ... i ran er about 5 miles ... seemed to run great once the mix was right... no pyro.. installing soon..:phy:
