RCCI - Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition interest

Is anyone working on or interested in Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI)?

Dr Rolf Reitz and team at the Universit of Wisconsin are developing the RCCI process to reduce emissions and increase engine efficiency. RCCI injects gas pre-ignition in a diesel engine to help the combustion process. They are claiming up to 50% gain in efficiency.

The link to their site is
University of Wisconsin Hybrid Vehicle Team Experimenting with Dual-Fuel RCCI Engines

The main challenge they list is dual fuel pumps, diesel and gas. It would not be hard to go to 2 pumps or use a gas can for the gas because it would not take as much.

Let me know.

Navistar does this with their heui fuel injectors by first injection a small pre ignition of fuel to pre heat the cumbustion chamber and then the large injection of fuel lowers emisions and increases efficiency

They are using gas injected into the cylinder during the intake stroke for RCCI. It looks like they are using up to 80% gas at high engine speeds to get short fast compustion for better effiency, lower egts and cleaner exhaust.

Part of the challenge would be to back off on the diesel during higher speeds and use more gas. RCCI changes the combustion characteristics of the fuel and the propagation of the flame front.

I would like to expirement with this but ill blow up my motor.. sounds fun though. I'd like to be part of that build

wait...the main challenge is the secondary pump? sounds like the easy part.. what about programming the injector to spray x amount at x time for x amount of time and increasing that amount over the higher rpm band by utilizing the cam shaft position sensor and crank position sensor. Cause that sounds hard to me..:humm:
