Black Diesel Side effects

I have been running a litle black diesel in my '95 twelve valve, i've been filtering it through a 10 and 5M filter bag, big magnet in the tank by the outlet. I'm running it 50/50 with diesel anf tyhe truck starts and runs as normal no extra smoke and drives fine. there just onething which has me a bit puzzled th einsdie of the my exhaust is now a white/grey colour...instead of th eusual black, does anyone else experience this, or know why it is and if its good or bad?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Ok I just read a huge thread on listereninge.com about WMO use, and one guy was getting white deposits in his motor prety dsimlar to what i'm seeing in my muffler. Now he claimed this stuff was abrassive and had damaged his bore. Buthe had no proof and hadn't run any tests to see if it was harmless dust or abrassive. Some other guys joine din and commented on th epossibility of the damage to his bore (Exhaust side) being simply caused by heat from the hotter burning oil he was runing around 90% if i remmber correctly.
Also he was using a cheap indian re make of a lister engine and the quality of the components was in question.
Itwas also suggested this white ash was non oil content i.e additives

So dos anyone know about these white deposits and egine wear with WMO in general on a Cummins?

Sorry to ask stupid questions but, what the heck is "black diesel"?

Black Diesel is used motor oil in regular diesel. He is running WMO at 50%, so the color is black.

Hey if you can save 4 bucks a gallon for a couple years you'll have the money to rebuild the engine :c:

Bill10656 03-29-2011 05:47 PM

4 bucks a galon, and the rest!! we paying £1.45 a LITRE over here! haha. But yeah I totally agree with you but i still like to know where i'm at with these things. I've been over on Cummins forum today alot of those guys have been running trucks for hundreds of thousands of miles on WMO with no problems so i'm pretty happy with it now, i'll just try to filter it a bit better, like down to 1 micron.

The 2nd gen in my sig has been run 50/50+ for 40k on unfiltered wmo, used hydraulic oil, pretty much anything that will burn. We haven't had any problems with it except fuel filters now and then. I know its not good for it but we have a couple spare ip's and an engine if it goes bad.

Bill10656 03-30-2011 04:15 AM

Nice one! Thats put my mind at ease, if i can run for that even if it did go to bits i woulda saved £1000's and these engines are cheap. So do you get the white stuff inthe pipe too?

deck60 03-30-2011 11:11 AM

glad to see I am not the only one into this from my research the filtering should be down to .5 micron you might also look at a centrifuge this will remove the vast majority of contaminates I want to run 2 tank system with 89-90% wmo this should save your pump and as far as the white residue it is really 2 things the oil burns a little hotter and is producing some ash and it could be additives if you want more info I am compiling it we are going to try it in our farm tractors this spring

Bill10656 03-30-2011 04:54 PM

I am now finishingthe filtering wit 2x 1 micron bags as they are relativley low efficiency, I have looked into centrifuging but it seems to be a bit too expensive for me to get one. Plus my research is showing that alot of people are running these trucks on stuff filtered to 1 micron with no problems for serious miles.

Strangely since fitting my #0 plate and 30psi boost fitting the tail pipe has turned back to black..any ideas? I have a twin tank kit andheat exchanger which i used to run ona Mercedes Sprinter (Chrysler to you guys, I think) a few years ago, was a bit of a PITA tbh and it starts fine on 50:50 but when it comes to winter i may re evealuate my approach. I will be interested to watch your research unfold.

i'm almost positive it was big bad diesel that told me he just pours his in his tank and lets his air dog deal with it. i'll probably do the same

Bill10656 03-30-2011 07:26 PM

newbie question, and i'll be off to search it, but, what is an airdog?

stodg73 03-30-2011 07:28 PM

An Airdog, F.A.S.S., Raptor are all lift pumps. The Airdog and FASS both have filters on them, so they don't have to use the stock filter.

run your black diesel like vegetable oil, inject at 165 degrees, and run a small 2 nd tank to rinse out engine with pure diesel at shut down.fattywagon heaters is all you need.

Bill10656 04-04-2011 02:51 PM

Do you rtun 100% on a twin tank system like this?
I just filled the 2nd tankw ith WVO and it wont start, went eventually like all the cold start videos on youtube then died and refused to splutter fo rmore than about 3 seconds...Fuel filter yeah? Was the same belnd as th elast tankful, which ran fine!

oldsinner111 04-04-2011 04:41 PM

I never run more than 70%.

dieseldonn 04-18-2011 12:43 PM

I run black diesel all the time. I do use a centrfuge to clean my oil though. Then thru a 2 mic fuel filter and a 5 mic water block into the truck. I mix my fuel anywhere from 50% to 85% with pump dino.

EasternAggie 04-21-2011 12:35 AM

Im about to change my oil its temping to dump that extra 80 miles in the tank :w2:

dieseldonn 04-21-2011 06:23 AM

Will work good as long as you filter the oil. Remember the cleaner the oil the better the fuel.

this is the most accurate statement I have fond yet this weekend I am going to get set up to filter my first batch and next week I am thinking I will be running it instead of wvo in my car

I have heard you can just filter it I plan on a 3 stage filtering
stage 1 55gal barrel 600 micron barrel filter plan on letting it sit overnight with a dewatering bag in the future I would like to let it sit for a week
stage 2 55gal barrel 100 micron barrel filter
stage 3 55 gal barrel 1 micron filter material slow gravity drip

I did find a company that will sell me the centrifuge bowl for 200.00 if anyone wants this info pm me

I am open to ideas as all of on here are

Dennis

Bill10656 04-21-2011 04:56 PM

tuns out my problem was an air leak inthe pre filter...possibly caused by me trying to crank it for long period whils tit was titally blocked up:dang:
