Oil Analysis

Who's doing it and how often? Just wanted to get a feel for how many on here are doing it and what kind of intervals people are running.
I know 06 diesel is and we are anxiously waiting for his results.
Also what labs are we using? I heard Blackstone used a bit. I might try them next time as well.
Any info you want to share would be great:U:

CHenry 08-22-2007 08:02 AM

I use Blackstone almost every oil change....any time i switch oils or do anything different to the truck that could have an effect on the oil, i want to see how it does at the 5k mile make and see if i can extend its use based on the results of the analysis. I was disappointed in Rotella syn. as it didn't hold up 10k miles as i was lead to believe it would. I am going to switch oils again next change and I will do another blackstone sample at 5k miles with that oil.

Marine 08-22-2007 08:41 AM

I am running the AME 15w-40 and am going to do one at 10,000 miles.
It is the sampling kit that Amsoil sells. I might try and find a more reasonably priced one.

The lab results are

The dealer said that there is nothing wrong, they checked for the dye and found none. But they only put about 4 oz in the antifreeze, that was then dilluted into the antifreeze and if any got into the oil it also was dilluted even more. I have "give: with trying to get them to fix anything that might be wrong with it. They said that the analysis said it was ok so why am I worrying about it. I might :se: myself later but I am going to :bombin: the rig this weekend since I already have it sitting in my room just waiting for me.

I use Blackstone Labs as you can see by my analysis, but them in bulk they are cheap and they never expire. I am going to do a sample after 7500 this time since that is what they suggested. The analysis is a up front cost that saves you money in the long run if you want to extend your oil change intervals I highly recomend them. Mine cost me $17 each when I bought 6 of them at a time. Also remember that if you are doing it to extem your change interval make sure that you get a TBN done also.

I knew you had the results. I spoke wrong. Knew we were waiting on the dye test. Curious. I guess we'll see how it pans out down the road.

I use Amsoil 15-40 and do my analysis every 8K and usually have to change at about 25K. Using www.oilanalyizers.com of course. :D

Well at least it's lasting as long as they say it should.:U:

D-Roc 08-25-2007 08:51 AM

I have dropped my interval from 7500 down to 5000- the conditions in which I drive my have gotten harder on the engine. About 2 hours a day city driving on the truck- all stop and go, heavy traffic. I am switching from Blackstone and Terry Dyson (only due to convenience) to Cat SOS analysis. It's cheaper for me and if I ask nicely, I could probably get my results back in a day. The oil lab is right across the street from the shop I work in and the shop is the same company as the oil lab.:U:

Yep, and thats just using the oil and EA052 filter. I'm going to install the by-pass kit because I know a guy who gets 60K between changes using nothing but Amsoil, the EA filters, and the by-pass filtration kit.

Not Herb is it?

Murphy2000 08-27-2007 08:35 AM

Amsoil dealer eh?

I use that stuff in my truck.. Good oil..

Heath 08-27-2007 12:53 PM

Amsoil dealer eh?

Good guess:U:

yeah that's what i've been wanting to do too. there's a guy on another forum i used to go to. he's a dealer and claimed at that time to have almost 100k on his oil. don't know if he was just bs or not.

Heath 08-27-2007 01:39 PM

It's being done, not sure why though. Once a year is good enough for me. don't want my drain plug to rust shut:)

dieseljunkie 08-30-2007 04:04 PM

Yup.. I ACTUALLY haven't switched over to AMSOIL in the dodge. its the only truck that still has dino oil in it, in my fleet of 5 cars. The only reason for that is, its not time to do an oil change yet. I have the oil on the way, and you can bet that I am gonna have the oil analyzed on a regular basis. I love the stuff. I also use Amsoil EO filters on all my rigs, from my 1984 Chevrolet S-10, 1988 toyota pickup, 2000 hyundai accent (wifes car) and my 1989 jeep wrangler. The Dodge is next.

As a matter of fact, yes. There also a couple of guys on another forum that are getting 60-70K between changes with good oil analysis.

Heath 08-30-2007 07:46 PM

Herb's a good guy. Sounds like he might be getting ready to sell and upgrade to a 6.7L.

DangerousDuramax 08-30-2007 07:56 PM

Yes he is but he keeps trying to get me to switch over to 5w-30. :)

If you do seek another oil analysis company, pay attention to what parameters they analyze for with the money you spend. Other oil analysis companies don't include TBN and other important parameters for their basic rate; they charge extra for things that are already included in the AMSOIL / Oil Analyzers kits.

Whit 08-31-2007 09:12 AM

Chuck........can you provide us with a base number chart for what Amsoil represents that way when a feller gets his analysis report he knows whats going on .....................alot of us dont really know what the report means

Duluth Diesel 08-31-2007 12:12 PM

AMSOIL AME 15W40 (CI-4+) Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine: TBN 12.10
AMSOIL DEO 5W40 (CJ-4) Premium Diesel Oil: TBN 8.00
AMSOIL HDD 5W30 (CI-4+) Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil: TBN 12.20
AMSOIL PCO Synthetic Blend 15W-40 (CI-4+) Heavy Duty Motor Oil: TBN 12.10

You can see how the new CJ-4 oils for 2007+ emissions with particulate exhaust filters are a compromise in oil TBN to help meet emissions. That's why if you don't have a particulate exhaust filter, you should try and run a CI-4+ oil rather than a CJ-4 oil. The TBN (Total Base Number) will drop as your oil ages and acidifies with use. It is basically a measure of the condition of the base stock in your oil.

excellent Chuck...thank you

I use the blue bottle and its TBN is 14.

Duluth Diesel 08-31-2007 01:37 PM

Not sure what product you mean by "blue bottle" and the TBN numbers from AMSOIL are the specs they will meet or exceed, so having a lab report 14 is not improbable.

-Chuck

DangerousDuramax 08-31-2007 01:45 PM

I get the 15W-40 with the blue label. It states a TBN of 14 right on the bottle.

Duluth Diesel 08-31-2007 02:07 PM

DEO, AME, PCO, or HDD? That's interesting that it states 14 on the bottle, since I took those TBN numbers right from AMSOIL. Hmm....

-Chuck

DangerousDuramax 08-31-2007 02:14 PM

AME. I wonder if during the reformulation for ULSD that it lowered the TBN. I bet I've still got the old stuff.

Heath 08-31-2007 02:19 PM

Must be counterfeit:guns:

DangerousDuramax 08-31-2007 02:40 PM

dieseljunkie 09-04-2007 09:28 PM

The AME I just picked up for the CTD says 12 TBN...

AME hasn't been reformulated for ULSD. It is still a CI-4+ oil. Hmm.....

DangerousDuramax 09-05-2007 01:10 PM

lol I looked on my bottle last night and it is a 12TBN. oops...:)

Heath 09-05-2007 03:45 PM

Well, that's cleared. :)

Teck 09-12-2007 10:34 PM

I have had my oil checked at Blackstone for several years now. All are good if changed around 7500, much over and they would start to drop off. I was using Amsoil but it do not last any longer then RolltaT, so it was costing to much when I had to change it every 2 months. I do run Amsoil every else. I just change @ 7500 and have it checked to know what it is doing.

06Dodge 10-03-2007 05:08 PM

Heath,

I finally got my oil changed and the sample will go out tomorrow to Oil Analyzers. For some reason I thought I had more a lot more then 6972 miles on my 7 month old oil, but at least we will see how well the 5w30 HDD held up. BTW I will post the info when I get the report back from the lab.

Heath 10-03-2007 06:06 PM

We'll be waiting:)

Marine 10-04-2007 05:04 PM

I have almost 9000 on my oil now in 6 weeks. It is black. When I get back to MT, I am sending a sample in. I had to add 1 qt just 1000 miles ago.

dozerboy 10-08-2007 04:05 PM

I use Blackstone first sample was @10K all good and I just sent this one for 15K. I use Delo 400, NAPA full fow, and a bypass.

Marine 10-08-2007 11:29 PM

What bypass do you use?

dozerboy 10-09-2007 03:08 PM

FS2500
