Oil recommendation

I have written Mobil 1 a letter about an oil recommendation for my Jeep 2.5l Turbo Diesel
Jeep recommends a 15W40 oil or a 10W40 for Europe.
I would like to drive a fully Synthetic oil. My last reserve Synthetic Mobil 1 15W50 that I brought along from the US is used up now.
To bad that this oil is not available in Europe.

Mobil recommended "Mobil 1 0W40 Turbo Diesel oil" for use on my Diesel. It fits my specs- but it is thin like water!!!:scare2:

The price is also expensive. They charge 23$ a quart. And I have to add 7 quarts!

Would you give it a try? What do you think about it? I have to change my oil every 6000miles.

I really don't know what to do right now.
Let me hear your thoughts, please.

Amsoil.....can you get it over across the pond?

Heath 12-05-2009 05:53 AM

AMSOIL is avaiable internationally and I can probably get you hooked up but it's not a simple process.
On the other hand, I would have no problem running the 0W-40 you mention. Yes, these oils seem like water in the bottle but at operating temps, it's running like any other 40 weight.
Might be a little overkill if you were in balmy temps, but if you have a good winter where you are, you'll be glad you have it.

I sell exxon mobil/ conoco phillips products and i recommend the turbo diesel 5-40 full synthetic mobil 1. i run it in my power stroke and love it. And its waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than amsoil ( here anyway) and its a full synthetic. FYI amsoil uses mobil base oils.....have my contacts...

Tinman875,

Show us all the proof that Mobil One 15w40 diesel oil is made with 100% Group IV & V base stock as when I asked Mobil they don't give me a straight answer as to what its made with? BTW I can buy Amsoil diesel oil cheaper then I can buy Mobil One turbo diesel at Walmart!

Tinman875 12-17-2009 10:51 PM

we don't carry a Mobil 1 15-40. Havent heard of it. I'll contact my mobil rep. I talked to amsoil and got the info from them, and my rep also confirmed it. but as for the Mobil 1 15-40 hmm. But they do make a Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5-40. If it says mobil with a number 1 it means full syn. if the box says mobil then the weight, well its not. Just like thier product Delvac 1. it is a full syn 5-40 for the over the road trucks. By the by wall mart has a special deal with Mobil because they buy it by the rail cars full. as most of thier products, and we are only a couple bucks more on price. But i dare you to ask some one who works at wall mart about oil. :s:

Now that's funny!! In fact, it is a lot of fun to ask questions in stores like that. Kind of like when I was in our newly opened Home Depot and the clerk asked me how he would know what wire to sell to customers (Talk about scary!! Don't know which is worse: A customer having no idea what he is installing and hooking up to the electrical grid or the clerk who has no idea what he is selling. I just asked him if he knew how to look it up in the NEC. I then had to tell him what that was . . . . :scare2:).

We would like to see some specs and info on these oils. I would also like to see some specs on how Mobil stacks up to or beats the 'others' out there. If this isn't a good thread - let's start one!!
Thanks,

Oil threads are never good threads. The performance differences betweet same grade top tier oils is not practically measureable. About the only thing of value that can be said is there are some not so good oils, and some application-specific issues to be aware of with regard to the API certifications, etc. All the rest is just personal preference.

OK, now all the Amsoil believers can pipe up. Flame suit on! :pca1:

Damn....i use Amsoil because i feel it is a great product....i really dont care what anyone else uses or their reasons for it. Money always makes a differance when purchasing any product.:humm:

My diesel loving brothers...I did not mean to start anything, just expressing what i have learned thus far in the oil busuiness.. oh, i looked for mobil 1 15-40 and thier turbo diesel 5-40 at wally world.. they dont sell it. and if anyone can buy amsoil cheaper than walmart pricing more power to you. there are several dealers in my area and none want to give a price cheaper than what is on thier website. but some believe that if they pay alot they recieive alot. I don't want to pay 140 snaps to change my oil on top of filter prices when i know of another product just as good (or better matter of opinion) for 1/3 the cost. to each his own. The reason for me sticking up for exxon mobil and conoco phillips is the fact that after talking with reps, people from the factory behind the scenes dudes you get a more insight on what goes on vs. just advertising on a fancy bottle. Any way i'm not going to be able to get the formulas and share with everyone, but if the local guys wanted to come into our store id be glad to show you around! As some has stated-- nailed it--just a preference. I dont want this to get like an old thread that comes to mind... how one auto make is better than another. If it rolls coal, its good enough to me! :rocking:

Not a diesel so I do not know how it'd handle soot, but Castrol Syntec is the only engine oil I found to calm down noisy lifters. Used a 5-40w in the winter and 10-50w in the summer.

Within 10 miles the lifters would make serious noise using 0-40w Mobil1
