Methanol Injection
 

Hello,

I saw an ad from Snow Performance advertising a electronically-controlled water methanol injection for diesels, Snow Performance: Diesel Stage 3 MPG-MAX? Boost Cooler, does anyone have one of these systems?

:humm: Maybe some of the vendors will know.

There is an article on that system in the Jan. 2009 issue of 8-LUG magazine. Snow did some dyno testing on their dually with that and an MP-8/Powerpup stack. That's the same water/meth system I'm going to be putting on my truck in the near future.
Running about 30-ish percent methanol, it's good for 50 or so horsepower, and about 2-3mpg according to Snow.
I'm sure one of our vendors will have lots more info for you as well.

I've got that model. Got it to keep from melting engines. I get 2 more mpg from it. Drops my egts down 100 degrees when I just run water. I usually just run standard blue washer fluid. I'm told it contains 25%-40% methanol. The only thing I don't like is that in the winter it's kind of likes to quench easily. And it's nice it comes with accurate gauges built right into the unit.:U:

In a nutshell, the water provides a cooling effect in the cylinder by absorbing some of the heat engery produced by the combustion process. The methanol acts as a catalyst which helps with more complete combustion of the fuel, which in turn produces more power.
From what I've seen and read, the horror stories you hear about methanol usually stem from spraying large quantities of a high percentage of methanol in the mix. This combined with added timing can increase cylinder pressures to the point that things start to come apart. These are usually custom designed systems used in race applications.
The over the counter setup like the MPG/MAX is pretty much a set it and forget it system. When towing it will help keep EGTs down, as well as help out with mileage, compared to running without...which is a good thing.. so yes you can tow with it.

Before I installed it and my intercooler, I had some expensive schooling.:ph: I stcuk in all my mods and thought, "Sweet". I had one engine go out. Turned my dipstick tube into a geyser. Thought, "Hey, it's pushing 250,000 miles. I was it's time." Replaced it. 6 months later, exact same problem. This time it was after a pissing contest with a Cummins. I won the battle, but I think he won the war. Come to find out, my pyrometer was a liar. So I bought the MPG Max as an insurance policy after I put in my third engine. And it has a digital pyrometer and boost gauge. Did you know that the #5 cylinder seems to be the first one to melt on a 7.3? Guess how I know that?:humm:
