Test For Bio-Diesel

We used to have 4 stations in town that advertised that they sold B20. Now the stickers are worn/pealed off of the pumps and the attendants don't know a whole lot about the product.

How can one tell if the fuel is B20?

Where are you located? There is a bio diesel association that has a nationwide list of stations selling B20, or you should be able to call you state department of weights and measures, tell them the concern and they usually will come and check the pumps. Usually they have certification stickers on the pump with their phone number.

I'm in Texas, but I just saw this on another thread...
The Austin Chronicle: News: Biodiesel Industry Fumes Over State's Heavy Hand

The State of Texas has all but banned bio-blends ... without some kind of super costly special testing and additive to reduce NOx emissions.

Apparently, I guess the governor doesn't like Willie Nelson.

So, it is all just a giant conspiracy... who is behind this?:argh:

You can easily test for percent biodiesel using a simple field test kit. Fleet Biodiesel makes two versions: one that detects bio in excess of 10% (their B5 version), and one that detects bio in excess of 30% (their B20 version). You can get these kits directly from Fleet, or you can get them in smaller quantities from places like B100Supply.com and biodiesel-kits-online.com.

Well to test if you have biodiesel the trucks only can run on B20 w/o modifications. So if your getting clogged filters or injectors then its greater than a B20 blend.

The filters clog up when the bio-diesel rinses off the residue from the petrol-diesel.

But, after you have used the bio-diesel for a while you don't have to worry about the filters clogging anymore, if you continue to regularly run bio-diesel. Bio-diesel cleans it out and keeps it clean.

Anyway, the kit is about $10 per test; which isn't too economical for me. The reason I wanted the test was because the stations here don't know what they are selling.

But, it looks like Texas is trying to run the Bio-guys out of business with their NOx emissions requirement.

It's getting harder and harder to get to the bio-diesel plant to splash some b100 into my tank, the demand is high and they sell out too quick.
