I Got A Choice And Hate It

My everyday usin tractor needs some work on it and I just can't decide if it's worth the money or not. It needs a new Clutch and a Rebuild on the Hydraulic pump. Together with parts and maintenance this adds up to about $4000. The tractor is only worth about that to begin with. It's a Massey 165 Diesel and has been a strong runnin tractor for some years now and the rest of it is in great shape. Starts every time and runs great. Normally I would attempt the clutch myself but that tornado a few weeks back took my shop out and I'm a long ways from having anything put back together from that.

My other option is to just go asshole deep in debt and buy a new one. I keep lookin at these 4WD Diesel Mihandra's. That 4WD sure would be nice and the extra 20hp it would have would be even better. But would the payments be worth it. I hate choices.

We were hopin to get a house put up this spring out on the property and I need a new barn now and then this come along.

When it rains, it pours and stormin right now. Literaly, we got tornado warning out right now for the area. This is January for gods sake, you don't have tornado's in January.

If ya replace the clutch and hydraulic pump how long for somethin else comes up would be the thing to look at. What else is gunna go south on ya. If everything else is in good condition I'd say put the $$$ into repairs. If your going to have to fix alot of other things too put the 4k on a new or gently used tractor.

I worked for a guy that said that the mihandra is a cheap version of a case tractor he has only had it a short time but said it was good so far.the 165 massey is a proven tractor I have a 135 and never had any problems out of it.They all had weak hydro pumps thats why we always added a aux pump when adding a loader.I hear you on the tornado I live in tenn.

As of right now everything else is strong, but that's always the question when your talkin about a 1970 model. It may fall on it's face the next day. I am not a gambler, that's a fact but I'm also cheap and poor. Sucks to have both these personality traits at the same time.

Wish I were smart enough to figure out this Aux pump, been wantin to do that for years. Readin the forums and askin questions about it but the answers are always over my head and nobody has given me a step by step with pictures for me to figure it out. And nobody around these parts runs Massey's to go look at one.

The guy I build trailers with has a Mihandra that he uses and abuses and it's been a good tractor. Like drivin a Cadillac when your used to mine.

ya can get an aux pump that runs off the PTO.........easy

Uncle Bubba 01-07-2008 08:48 PM

Ya I keep hearin easy but I aint figured it out yet.

he aux pump hooks to the front of the crank and runs off a separate holding tank I'll make some calls in the morning and get the part numbers and post them.Yea the old massey mine 70's no power steering kinda rough ride but it does everthing I've ever asked it to do and always started even in 10 degree weather.Last year I moved into a subdivision (sucks) wifes idea don't really need it anymore but will not get rid of it I like to get it out and ride around the burbs on it just to get the looks

Thanks, those are some details that would help out.

Ok I called a buddyat the massey dealer he said that they have a front moount for about 600-700 dollars there is afew things he has to know about hte tractor. The pump mounts on the front of the engine on the crank and needs it's own tank but if your goning to use it for a loader some loaders have a tank built in. not to hard to install.and if you use a pto mount pump you loose the use of your pto not good.imo the front mount is the way to go call up the local mf dealer he can get the part #'s you will need and look them up on the net maybe you can get them alittle cheaper.:U:
