Tractor Questions

http://dallas.craigslist.org/grd/528798703.html

A friend of mine is looking to buy a tractor and asked me to take a look at this one for him. I know all the basics to check, filters, fluids ect is there anything specific on these old ford tractors I should look for?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, make sure the rear hydraulics are have had a refresh and check all the front linkage and steering components. Those older tractors had a tendency to break rods over rough terrain. Look for areas that look like there may have been a leak and was then cleaned up. If there arent new hoses in the area that you see there was an obvious leak then they used a seal swelling fluid to stop the leak instead of correct the problem.

Check all the Hydraulics, lift something with some weight and leave it off the ground and turn the tractor off. It should hold in place, if not then the seals or pump is going bad. Check that it goes in and out of all the gears smooth. If there is a hillside around anyplace near drive up it, half way up stop and take the tractor out of gear. This leavs some load on the clutch and if it is worn it will be sticky and maybe even impossible to get out of gear.

Other then that just make sure it runs smooth and as DD said before, check it over for leaks.

Welcome to the site, hope to see ya spendin some time here.

i would make sure the engine is cold when u go to look it over. some ppl will warm them up so they don't smoke. drive it shift it use it move some dirt or something. just common sence stuff. just like buying a used car or truck

If your going to use the PTO for anything, go ahead and try that as well, its not uncommon to have problems with the PTOs in these tractors.
