Diesel For Lawn Mower??

I have a Jon Deere SST. These are zero turn units that look like a small garden tractor, but the front wheels are casters. There are many nay-sayers about these, but mine has done the work of a small tractor and is holding up well. This mower uses a OHV 18HP Briggs. It is a V twin in a vertical shaft configuration. It is a good engine, but except for this mower, my push mower, and a small truck my fleet is diesel. I want to keep just one fuel around. Without 'braking the bank' is there a vertical shaft diesel make that I might be able to put in this for under $2000?:w2: I think a 15HP diesel would put out as much as the current 18HP gas.

i didn't see a vertical shaft. wouldn't be a bad idea to call them and see if they can find something fer ya...... hope this helps....

i think Yanmar makes diesel out boards that are vertical shaft.

maybe you could buy just the engine?

It would be a good idea to change out that v twin Briggs.... i hear nothing but bad about them dudes.

my buddy has an older Kubota with a 52 mowing deck for $2000.
3 point hitch and chains. It has like 200 hours on it

Its like a mid to late 80s tractor but it runs awesome.
it is just a bit bigger than a garden tractor.
If I had 2000 beans I would snag it.

the only problem i can forsee is mounting a radiator but heres one

Yanmar 2V750 was designed to go on garden tractors. Water cooled with a radiator and fan. V-twin, vertical shaft

we had a older hustler with a 72" deck and it had a diesel on it and it was great! if memory serves me right it was a kabota, had a pto deck. we bought a new hustler z serise that has a 24or 25hp gasser on it and it works ok but the diesel had way more power and wouldnt pull down in tall grass. only draw back on the diesel is the inital cost:booo: but i thought it was worth it and 10gallons would last all day

.................10/4 on the Kubota,we have a Grasshopper 928D with a 72 inch deck and a 3 cyl kubota diesel on our campground in florida,it mow's over 25 acre's each time we cut,it's a 2001 and has over 1800 hr's on it and we have our 1st issue with it,the front seal has a slow drip to it and it started AFTER we took the mower in to put a new pto shaft(not motor related) in,being as it drive's from the front i'm thinking they did something to it,did not leak before it went in,it went to grasshopper,NOT kubota for the pto shaft.

That is a pretty cool setup. John Deere uses alot of Yanmar engines, i'm surprised this hasn't been in a mower yet.:U:

pretty much all the major manufacurers do, Massey, Deere, Kubota, Simplicity, my fvs are the little kubota BX series4x4 23 hp and can have a loader/backhoe and a mower deck

AABEAR 05-26-2009 05:24 AM

JD makes a diesel lawn mower that is what you are looking for

Bosshogg 08-27-2009 10:15 PM

You need the engine out of a 355D john deere. 18HP vert. shaft and I believe the radiator is on top. It is a yanmar, and it was also used in the F735 front mount mower. Stout little engines, but they shake something fierce at idle!!!
