yes, another chip thread...

first off my truck . 2001 ford f-250 crewcab shortbox . 7.3 with BD compressor wheel, napa 6637, 4" mbrp exhaust, rerouted crank case vent. zf6 stock clutch, 4x4, 3 inch lift, 285's.

in the new year im going to be in the market for a chip. ive done a lot of research on different chips and i think im going to go with a ts style chip, but not sure on who's tunes.

i use the truck truck for driving to work about 75/25 highway city driving, going camping in the bc interior so climbing some decent hills along the coquihalla loaded with people and gear, hauling firewood, the odd time towing car trailers with moderate loads.

the thing im concerned about is at the moment my truck has a slight clunk while im cruising if i let off the throttle . it seems like either excessive backlash in the diff or transmission gears. i greased the splines on the driveshaft it helped slightly, but its still there.

so to make a short story long, now for the question lol. most of my buddies 7.3's are autos. i ran into a guy who had a 6 speed in his aswell with a dp style chip. i got to talking and he said he also has the same slight clunk with his , but when he has his chip on the clunk gets real excessive, almost undriveable , like when you run a low ohm resistor with the icp mod.

im just wondering if anyone with chipped 7.3's with standards can chime in and let me know how their trucks are driveability wise, whos tunes you have , whos tunes youve tried, and why or why not you like them over someone elses.

thanks guys, kyle:jump:

I would recomend Power Hungry Performance, Beans Diesel, Swamps or GearHead for tunes...

The clunk you talk of is not normal, not sure what it is...

Could be Axle wrap, could be gear issues, could be the center support (most likely), but without looking at it hard to say.

thanks for the reply, ive been leaning towards either swamps or php. ive checked the steady bearing, ujoints, yokes, no axle wrap, im assuming its lash in the diff or the tranny. in nuetral you can twist the driveshaft about 1/4 turn.

sounds like the diff is worn out... if you put it in reverse and back up then stop and go forward does it take a second to catch and go? this would be the diff if so...

i run PHP for tunes, and so far i've been really impressed with them :c:

Last time i heard a clunknig noise when i was taking off and let off sometimes, i had to put a new rearend in my truck..

yeah, im thinking thats probably the problem considering the amount of play it has when the trucks in nuetral. good thing my buddy owns a diff and tranny shop :choochoo:

My truck has the exact same "clunk" your talking about, I've had it for a couple years. I think it is just the play between the gears in the trans, a bit of slop in the transfercase chain and the play in the rear differential teeth. Mine's not bad and I only notice it at freeway speeds.

this weekend or the next im gonna pop the cover and check out the r&p backlash. ill keep you posted on what i find or if i find a way to tighten it up some:rocking:

sweet ha cause mine does it at lower speeds, i'm sure the U-joints could use a change on mine though :humm:
