Wanting faster spool up
Are there any other housings, etc. that will net me a faster spool up with my Garrett? It has the 1.10A/R-.84A/R compressors.

You have an early 99 I would assume by the numbers you gave me... What other mods have you done? Chip? Intake? Exhaust? Gauges?
What boost numbers are you hitting? EGT's? |

What boost numbers are you hitting? EGT's? I have a 3 angle valve job, heavily ported heads, custom fabbed intake with long tube runners, Custom header setup for turbo and bigger injectors. This turbo will hopefully be the last piece of the puzzle so to speak. I was just wondering if they made smaller housings, etc. so I can get her spooled before lets say 4K RPM. I have asked over on my "other" site and everyone says it probably wont work at all, but they had said that about the HX/HY Holsets too... now everyone is using them:humm: |
.84 is the smallest exhaust housing they make for that turbo... Look around for a gt25 or something if you looking for quicker spool, then just wastegate it.

What size engine? Horsepower goal? Rpm Range? We really need a lot more information if you want help with this.

88 Chrysler 3.0 Liter Forged internals 3 angle valve job heavily ported heads custom fabbed intake with long tube runners Custom header setup for turbo +20% injectors Looking to net 500 HP with a max RPM of 6500 (It has been done before but with a Holset... which I can't seem to find anywhere around here :() |

My bad. Been busy at work. Here's what we have:

Bleh I'll do the math later. I'm lazy today. lol.

Ok by my calculations:
Disp 183 C.I. VE 95% May be a bit optimistic but you seem to have done a lot of work to your heads so who knows. If it is it means your required boost pressure will go up for your hp target. A/F Ratio 14 Just a bit on the rich side to help with detonation BSFC is .55 Air manifold temp i put 130* Will you have an intercooler or water injection? if not then this will be higher which will make your airflow requirement go up. RPM target for max hp is 6k moving this higher will lower your boost pressure slightly Atmo pressure 14.7 psi Airflow needed: 64 lb-min or 844 CFM at 46 PSI or 4.1 PR Looking at the comp map of the 7.3l turbo found here, I think it is going to be just a tad short. however it looks like the Garrett GTP38r would be about perfect for you while also increasing the spool up over the stock PSD turbo. To answer your question directly Banks sells 1.0 A/R quickspool turbine housing. However when your already going to struggle a litte(IMPO) to get the flow you need, I would be hesitant to go any smaller on the housing. ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- I know you want to use a ford turbo but I bet you could use a Holset HE351VGT(may be a little small about like the Ford Turbo) or HE431VGT. Then use an air cylinder to actuate the vanes. That would improve spool up and still allow you the top end flow. Or you could just fix them in position. One position for top end flow(dynoing and the like) and one for daily driving. BEst of all they are cheap. 351 are usually around 130w/ shipping and 431 arou around 250 w/ shipping and they pop up on ebay all the time. |
Ok first off, sorry for being a post whore. Second of all. My math may or may not be right lol. I think my boost pressure estimate is a little high.
THe compressor side of the GT38 is close to the size of an HX40 with a 60mm inducer and and 80 mm exducer. Turbine side I really have no clue. I would think it would work but I guess you get to be the guinea pig lol. |
