Aftermarket downpipe worth it?

Just wondering if they are worth it on a truck with intake/exhaust/tuner or not really?

Re: Aftermarket downpipe worth it?

I noticed it on mine when I did it. I say its a must on every obs

What did you notice? Increased turbo/exhaust sound? Faster spooling? Earlier spooling? Holds boost better?

prison 03-23-2011 07:18 PM

you guys have the crushed downpipes right? mine came off a bus and isn't crushed like the truck pipes i've seen

85_305 03-23-2011 07:25 PM

According to the guy in my other thread ya they are crushed. So your school bus DP is 3"? Where do I go about finding a school DP for cheap???

prison 03-23-2011 07:33 PM

bus garage? lol and its off a 7.3 short bus. a junkyard if you can find one

So if I pick up a down pipe, you gonna help me beat out the firewall so we can install it? ;)

prison 03-23-2011 07:53 PM

you shouldn't need to with a 3"

85_305 03-23-2011 07:56 PM

From what I gather on here, ANY aftermarket DP will need the firewall beat in to make it fit?

3" downpipe may only require the cab seam to be bent down.

joebob3093 03-24-2011 12:51 AM

depending on the downpipe you my not need to change anything but some require changing the cab seem. i noticed a decrease in EGTs and seemed to have more throttle responce also noticed more exhaust noise.

prison 03-24-2011 01:22 AM

i'd rip out the old dp in a hurr either way

I was reading something about this cab seam needing to be pounded. Thanks for the input.

Thats the plan, I'm waiting for you to hook me up with a 3" bus dp though ;)

Do the Downpipe... Factory downpipe is so restrictive, its pathetic...

You will need to make room for the aftermarket downpipe. Nothing a crowbar can't take care of. If you aren't willing to do that, rent a port-a-power and make room for it that way. It's easier than you think.

85_305 03-26-2011 06:00 PM

Do you think a DP would be more affective than a full exhaust minus the DP? IE, should I do a DP then do the rest of the exhaust?

95powersmoker 03-26-2011 06:02 PM

You can do that If you want...

IMO, Exhaust kits are cheap enough, just do it all at once...

85_305 03-26-2011 06:03 PM

That would certainly be optimal I suppose... I'm trying to segment my mods though and share them with my Volkswagen haha

95powersmoker 03-26-2011 06:07 PM

Exhaust, intake, gauges, chip... Then drive it and smile.

85_305 03-26-2011 06:22 PM

Thats the plan :tu:

what is the best way to "adjust" the firewall after the pipe is installed and REALLY DONT WANNA TAKE IT BACK OUT?

Haveastroke 07-05-2012 11:41 PM

i installed the downpipe this weekend. i thought i had clearance till my drive home. it is hard as hell to bend out of the way with the pipe installed so make good and sure you have clearance before you weld it all up.

Any preference on the gauges or chip? (97 7.3 Automatic)
