97 powerstroke. chip/programmer help ?

Hey Diesel Bombers.
I own a 97 F250 Powerstroke. I found it on craigslist and picked her up on July 7th. It has just over 200,000 miles, and rebuilt transmission within the last year. I am not sure if anything was upgraded in the transmission. The truck starts right up and shift extremely smooth. It came to me with a 4 inch down pipe and 5 inch staight piped exhaust. Seeing that the exhaust was poorly rigged together I pulled that off and put 5 inch stacks on. The previous owner was running the edge evolution. He pulled that out before he sold it to me. With all that said, the motor seems a little tired and I would like to boost the power a little bit, but I am a little uneasy about chips and programmers. I've heard stories from many that a chip or programmer can bring many problems. Can anyone give me some advice? Recomendations?

Get a custom tuned chip. Before you do that you need to do an Intake and guages, sounds like you have the downpipe and everything taken care of.

Custom tunes are what you want on a 7.3 they are the best, you have lots of options, wildman, swamps, PHP, Gearhead, beans, bts, etc.

Thanks PSD0389.
I was thinking about getting a set of gauges from glowshift.com seeing that I want to stay on the "cheaper" side. What intake would you recommend? Again on the cheaper side...

i have heard glow shifts are cheaply made, if you want cheaper get a cheap set of autometers. if you want a cheap intake so a DIY 6637 intake. and for the chip i would go with either wildman or swamps.

Cheapest and best working intake out there for these trucks is a 45 degree 4" exhaust elbow and a 6637 filter from napa, its like 40 bucks and it flows plenty of cold air, thats what I run

i like tony wildman tunes i ran them. switched to swamps aftrer i did my injectors, and i have to say im very happy with swamps tuning, not saying tony is bad i just like the way my truck shifts, it shifts much better with the swamps tunes then before.

Alrighty. Some have told me just to go with the edge evolution, seeing that I just replaced the water pump, front u-joints, wheel bearings, shackle bracket, an oil leak under the turbo, and i dont have the money for a custom tuned chip right now. But im a little sketched with edge. Also, when I pulled my turbo off, I found that a couple of the fins in the wheel were bent. So...something went through the intake. The damage is not extreme, but could that be a reason for a lack in power?

Do not get an evolution, they can kill your trans, I had one a long time ago and it sucked
