If you're pulling in hot, under hood air, you're not getting as much power, with lower EGTs as you could otherwise.
If you want to do something "Home-Made", try this . . . . Find a thin-walled stainless steel soup pot with matching lid AKA: Stock Pot. Attachment 50556 Using a Big Honkin Air Filter (BHAF) for your measurements . . . . Attachment 50557 Shorten the pot so it's a little taller than your BHAF. Give it about 1/2 ~ 3/4" extra to account for some gasketing. I used some sheet-metal shrinkers (HVAC tool) to make the tube of the pot stick into the bottom once I shortened things. Attachment 50558 From there I simply riveted it together. Attachment 50559 Then I cut a rectangular window in the pot that would allow connecting it to the front of the truck behind the headlights. I used some thin sheet metal commonly used to make those seamless gutters to make a duct. Attachment 50560 Set your BHAF in there such that the incoming air can get around things for even distribution. Attachment 50561 Now cut the lid to match the offset filter. Attachment 50562 Things should stack-up like this so far. Attachment 50563 Now use some 1/2" sheet foam rubber to make a gasket for the lid and a round disc for the bottom of the pot so the filter will be somewhat squeezed snug when you put it all together. I used a couple of small Ell brackets to support the butt of the installed filter. See if you can find some snap-action clips to hold the lid on. Attachment 50564 It should look something like this so far .. .. Attachment 50565 |
Heres how I did mine...
