H1C/H1E Hybrid... Lets Call it the H1D...

Just a quick over view of what goes into making a holset hybrid turbo. Luckly Holset uses 4 8mm bolts on the rear of alot of the backing plates for the compressors allowing you to simply swap them. So grab a beer and hang on!

Here is the H1E turbo
Attachment 56834

Start by removing the V-Band Clamp that holds the compressor housing on...
Attachment 56835

Then pull it off revealing the compressor wheel
Attachment 56836

Next I removed teh 4 bolts holding on the exhaust housing...
Attachment 56837

The housing does not bolt to teh center section, there are two clamps that hold it. this allows you to clock the center section so the oil flow is correct for you application.
Attachment 56838

If you are not working with a new turbo you might have to persuade the exhaust housing off... Thsi might be as easy as a few light taps with a deadblow hammer to a last resort of breaking out a torch, if you do this you run a REAL high risk of baking the seals and having to rebuild the turbo.
Attachment 56839

Now we can take off the compressor wheel... these a left hand thread... that mean you turn the not clockwise to remove it. on the H1E the compressor and exhaust nuts are 12 point and on my stock 89 H1C the nut on the exhaust is 12 and the compressor is 6. This will be very important when you reassemble it you need to torque teh nut to 150 in. lb. if it's a 6-point nut, 135 in. lb. if it's a 12-point nut. After removing the wheel you can pull teh exhaust wheel and shaft out as one piece
Attachment 56840

After the shaft is out of the way we can start taking off the backing plate. Here are the 4 bolts I was just talking about that makes this swap pretty easy.

After removing them the backing plate comes right off! and you are left with this...
Attachment 56831

Do the same steps to the H1C then reverse it to put the compressor wheel, backing plate, and compressor housing off the H1E onto the H1C.

And this is what you get... Looks like I'm gonna need a custom cross over pipe!

DazedandConfused 08-03-2008 08:50 PM

Whats the size of the compressor on the H1E? Also what size exhaust housing are you running on it?

DB Admin 08-03-2008 09:04 PM

Excellent !!

RSWORDS 08-03-2008 09:05 PM

18cm housing
Compressor inducer: 58.05mm
Compressor exducer: 81.57mm

Just got word from my machinest that the new flange for the intake is done. Good timing too because the sylicone boots should be here tommorow and I will be able to button this thing up! Only went with 2.5" tubing for the intake. We tried 3" but the bender crimped it way to much. Will flow more than stock and I have some other things up my sleave for latter.

Hey rswords, do you think the compressor from a H1E would fit a hx-35? or is there some problems? I can probably get ahold of a H1E pretty easy and i have My old H1C at the farm on the shelf. Maybe i could use the H1C middle the hx-35 hot side and the H1E compressor?! Did i just answer my own question? Help me straighten this all out! Thanks

welderboy250 08-10-2008 10:11 PM

i think u r gonna have trouble mixing h and hx series parts. hx35 with an hx40 compressor wheel and housing work well

hhhmmmm... Not sure. I think I would do the HX40. The only reason I am even messing with this thing is the H1E was Free and no one realy has done a whole lot with them. Only found one other person that was made teh H1C/H1E hybrid. Just trying new things. Never know might be a bust of could be the new hot thing! If you want to see what all will work start taking things apart! :D Wont ever know if yuo dont try!

GRI 08-11-2008 10:39 AM

what are you trying to accomplish doing this hybrid? Sorry I am not a turbo expert and was just wondering what benefits this "may" acomplish.

thx

nice write up by the way:rocking:

Shooting for more air to help cool down the truck some. It will probably spool a little slower than the stocker but that does not bother me... It's a track truck.

As I said... May work may not. No one will know till we try it!

turbo16 08-11-2008 04:53 PM

thats nice to know

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

i have the same turbo on mine

RSWORDS 08-11-2008 09:38 PM

which one?

The new cross over pipe is on and the truck is running.... IT WORKS GREAT!!!!!!!

On a 0-60 run before the hybrid I could peg the Pyro at 1500*, I ran a boy in a Civic up to 80 mph and it took the neddle 3 seconds to come off the peg. I dont even WANT to know how hot it was with the Hybrid I can keep my foot in it as long as I want and all I can get it to is 1300* Also clead up all the full throttle smoke :yeah: Needs more Cow Bell... eeerrrr Fuel Screw...

Here is the intake I made.

3/4" plate with 2.5" tube coming out. Had a bead rolled in it so that it would hold the boot a little better.
Attachment 56696

Welded on the inside so that it looks REAL clean
Attachment 56697

My Sylicone Boots...
Attachment 56698

On the truck, Gonna paint it w/ some High Temp paint... Just don't know what color... I'm thinking white with some siler tin roof paint to match the rest the truck! :D

I like the new crossover pipe. Really trick looking and should flow some real air thru there!

need to see that thing in action.....

foxracing5578 01-05-2010 10:02 PM

Looks sweet!! where can i find those silicone boots?

Benjamin 01-05-2010 10:23 PM

ETS Silicone Connectors and Clamps - Sport Compact Warehouse - Import Performance Specialist

or you can try calling the number that is printed on the boot in the pictures above. i believe they are ETS brand (Extreme Turbo Systems)

Cool thanks!! Just ordered mine, can't wait to get them on!!:jump:

seandonato73 01-06-2010 05:01 PM

so why not just go with the gillet 60mm upgrade??

RSWORDS 01-06-2010 05:40 PM

This gets you teh same thing, it pretty much is a Gillet 60mm upgrade, I got my turbo free. You can get H1E's real cheap too... cheaper then teh upgrades if you look around.

seandonato73 01-06-2010 06:00 PM

oh ok cool,i was just wondering

DieselSharker 01-13-2010 05:45 PM

Do you have the specs on the flange? I need to have one made as well as I have a bigger housing sitting on the floor of my truck waiting to get pulled in but since it's my daily driver I can't really take the crossover off to take measurements and such. Namely, I need the distance between the centers of the bolt holes, bolt size, and the width of the plate.

mkriebs 07-30-2010 01:30 PM

Very nice, I had my mind on a project like this too, just with a HE351 VNT compressor. Have yet to see if it would work though.

Onemoparnut 08-02-2010 04:17 PM

Does anyone know how this works out on an intercooled truck. I have a cast aluminum elbow that comes off the compressor housing and goes to the intercooler. Would that peice be able to be reused or would I need a new 90 degree elbow.

mkriebs 08-02-2010 04:30 PM

You could just use a silicone 90*.

Onemoparnut 08-02-2010 04:39 PM

I know I could but I was just wondering if anyone knew if the origional setup would work. Also will the down pipe bolt up or does it need modified?

mkriebs 08-02-2010 04:41 PM

I guess I am not sure how the cast elbow works, if its part of the original turbo or what.

As for the downpipe, assuming its the right diameter (pretty sure 4"), it would work just the same.

6btDakota 08-09-2010 10:12 PM

I think whenever you take the compressor wheel off the shaft and especially mix other parts it needs re balanced or its not going to last long before it wears out.
