Can't hear the turbo?

I know this question is repeatly asked but few fit my situation.
I have a 94 f350 7.3 idi factory turbo, boost gauge and a 6" offset stack (straight piped). The truck is loud but i just can't seem to be able to hear that turbo at all, i have a boost gauge and im pushing about 8-10 psi but no turbo sound. I have heard that the downpipe off the turbo has alot to do with that, but i can't seem to find out where to acquire one, it seems pretty farfetched for a downpipe to my it so quiet i can't hear it. Any help/ advise would be great. Thanks

get a hypermax cowl induction kit(bout 80 bucks) and banks sells upgraded downpipes for the factory setups. they dont list it on the site but call them up. they have em.

D.C. or anyone else,
What sound does the turbo make or what signs (if any) does it give you if it is going out?

Thanks,
Sandman

the factory turbo setup is set for 8 psi wastegated. some do creep up to 10 lbs.

Im completely content with 8lbs of boost, because I know how much money is involved in acquiring more boost. Is it possible to make your own down pipe? Lets sa
y outta flew pipe and a mig?

some turbos have a metal silencer ring held in by a metal c clip you 'll see it if you take the intake tube off the turbo. it looks like its part of the turbo. i know all the cummins have them once removed it sounds like a kenworth. wisslin dixie

DieselCrawler 08-24-2011 06:17 PM

we dont have the scilencer ring.

as for the down pipe, some guys have bought OBS stroker down pipes, cut the flange off and adapted the original flange to the bigger pipe. bingo, 3in down pipe.

Does the Banks setup for the '88 7.3 IDI have a silencer ring?

chopperfixer 10-04-2011 11:22 AM

Just an update. I made my own downpipe, it turned out pretty good ill post some pictures in my prof.

i hav the 94 idi factory turbo and with radio volume up just a little i cant hear mine but radio off it makes a whizing sound and you can hear it winding down when the excellorator is let off.

I have the '88 7.3/Banks turbo. I can just barely hear the turbo if the airbox is off and I'm looking at it and I listen real close!

Well, someone made the ones at the store.......

i have a 94 did factory turbo also and i have the stock down pipe with 4" straight pipe and 6" dual stacks, with the back window open my turbo is pretty loud i guess but it sounds more like the wizzing sound but it does whistle quite a bit when decellerating.

ALWAYSREADYROB 02-06-2012 12:42 PM

Hey Smokin....with the 4' straight pipe, why a stock down pipe ?
I ask because next on my list is exhaust and Im not sure to go 3 or 4" back to a good muffler, do peole ever put headers on these 7.3 s and dual exhaust ?

DieselCrawler 02-16-2012 07:17 PM

yep. stans headers makes long tube headers for the NA version only. no headers for turbo engines.

muddyold7.3 02-17-2012 04:04 PM

do you hear it more with that downpipe?

zrider 10-13-2012 09:42 PM

Can't here the turbo

The downpipe is the answer. The stocker is too restrictive to spin it up. That is why there is only a 5 hp increase from NA 7.3 to factory turbo. I fitted on a 3" Dp and 4" straight pipe kit out the back for a PowerStroke. Works great. Added very nice power and I can actually here the turbo now. Mind you it is not the same as the bigger aftermarket model turbo's, but I would guess an increase of at least 20hp and 50lbs torque. Increased towing speed over mountain pass from 40 (foot to floor) to 65 (~ 1/2 to 3/4 peddle.). Horse trailer loaded with two horses and gear is about 7500lbs. with another 500 in truck.
