Can I Blow SMOKE?
Just wondering if my 88 f 250 7.3 diesel will blow some smoke without a lot of money and work done to it?
more fuel less air will give ya smoke
I think you can crank up the pump on those. Is it the non turbo setup?
Smoke without power is useless, I dont mind blowing smoke as long as the truck is hauling butt.
Yes it is non turbo
I know you can turn up the pump on that then, I belive its on the pasenger side of the pump I will see if I can find the pictures.
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Im not sure if Im aloud to do this but here is the article. http://www.powerstroke.org/articles/...IDI/Page1.html |

thanks for the info I will try this
Have you done any other mods to the truck? exhuast intake anything?
My truck is all factory
Probably be a good idea to do some kind of intake to flow some more air and also a better flowing exhuast, Ive heard that those truck sound bad ass straight piped.
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- And also a egt guage to make sure you dont melt things down while your haveing fun with the new smoke. |
Yes you can blow some smoke but it won't be very much compared to what some engines can toss out.
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Also an easy way to get you close on the screw location is to take loose the oval shaped cover on the front of the timing gear cover and then rotate the engine over until the dowel pin is at 12 o'clock then when you pop off the triangle cover on the passengers side of the pump the screw should be just about right where you need it. Now this screw will turn HARD - this is because it's pressing against a leaf spring on the inside of the pump. Typically you can get about 1 full turn out of it max - if it happens to bottom out back it off about one flat on the allen wrench. Reason for this in some extreme cases the leaf spring can break while the engine is running because it needs to have some springy-ness to it. If the leaf spring breaks then the pump will be garage by the time the pieces of the spring get ran through the rotating assembly of the injection pump. I sometimes found it was easier to drop the high idle solenoid off the side of the injection pump to gain a little more access to the triangle cover when turning them up. |
I think they also make some bigger injectors for those engines as well. Search around on ebay.
only person that i know of that makes bigger injectors for the mechanical fords is DPS and from what ive heard they arent the best, even though 40 horses for 250 bucks aint bad. oh and if you go with a turbocharger with more than 20 psi plan on those 400+ dollar head studs.
ATS make 75 hp injectors as well if ne one is wondering, that wat i got
straight pipes

So around how much power should I expect if i only adjust the fuel pump? My pickup is the 6.9 liter IDI non turbo model.
I was always told about 15hp per ¼ turn of the screw, do not go too nuts though because it is easy to burn a non turbocharged motor up by overfueling it
egt guage is a must, these engines can get pretty hot expecially without a turbo with minor fuel adjustments. and as old as they are now there could be a good chance its already been turned up. you dont want to see over 1200 degrees egt.
Lesson: Dnt crank fuel up to high for more smoke
Fact: Cool smoke + pyro at 1350* = 1st melted down IDI for me:argh::madd::argh: |

*don't do as I say* :pca1:
I ran my '86 6.9 pretty hard. elec pump and 4" stacks. i cranked the pump all the way then backed it of a hair... dunno what my EGT's ever got to but i drove it for 20k till someone hit me and totaled it. never had any adverse effects with heavy smoke at WOT. (excuse the audio) on a side note, anyone wanna buy a 6.9? it was in a rollover but still runs great lol! |
these engines will heat up quick. most say only go 1/6th of a turn(1 side of the allen key) max. any more without and other mods will burn them up. have you removed the soup bowl under the air cleaner lid?
easy way to tell if it has been turned up is the 2 bolts on that triangle plat should have red plastic on them to tell if it was tampered with. |
If you want to throw more fuel at it, go to oilburners.net. Contact Agnem about his moose pumps and moose misters. They are the best way to safely throw more fuel into an IDI. Gonna get them as soon as I can afford to.
i wonder if adding propane with all the extra fuel will help the burning and maybe with the egt's?
adding just the propane without turning up the fuel will wake the truck up better than just turnin up the fuel and propane doesnt make the truck blow black smoke
my buddys got bigger injectors, chip, turbo back and intake on his...ROLLS SERIOUS COAL!!! Also i think he has a smoke switch:humm:
Your buddy does not have an IDI if it has a chip...
right but didnt he say he has a 7.3? sorry if i read wrong:argh:
the 7.3 idi and the 7.3 powerstroke are 2 different animals.

How to turn up the pump: Adjusting the Fuel Injection Pump on a 6.9L & 7.3L Ford Diesel IDI
WTH do I go for bigger injectors on my '88 7.3? |
yes you can
if you strait pipe true duall it and turn the pump up 3/4 of a turn and advance the pump timing i did this to my 86 6.9 and i had to turn it back down or i was gonebe paying a hefty fine i rolled more coal than any new hoped up diesel it will look like a frait train and give you a little extra at the peedle but down side is that you got to remember when you roll coal it is just un burned raw fuell coming out your pipes so your fuell bill is going to incres A LOT
I run mine straight with it exiting in front of the rear wheel on one side and they sound friggin' awesome(especially when passing annoying Priuses) you can hear her talking good at about 65 WFO:c:
where did you find the ats injectors
Port the intake and exhaust. Just place new gaskets on them and mark out the extra metal, then grind it out. Tune the pump like one of the other users said using the Allen bolt on the side of the pump, one flat should do it. Then with the engine off, loosen the 3 9/16" bolts holding the pump to the gear housing and gently turn the pump to the passenger side. There is a small line on the pump to housing on the driver side. You want this line 1/16 of an inch past the line. Straight pipe 3" exhaust if you want also wont hurt. The less restriction the better.
