Istalling pyro in idi turbo

where is the best spot to put the probe on a pyro. someone told me in the downpipe is this true? where did you put yours?

cowboyford16 08-14-2010 02:10 PM

you can put them on your down pipe, I personally put mine on the driver side manifold on number 8 cylinder because you get a more accurate reading on your egt's instead of your down pipe

Drill and tap?

yep, if doing it without removing the manifold, leave the engine running. this will help push the metal out of the manifold as u are drilling.

You want to know the cylinder temperature, so the closer to the exhaust leaving the cylinder, the better. At about 1200*, the pistons will start to melt. The manifold is the best place, but you can put it in an u-pipe as well. I have mine in my u-pipe, a few inches after the exhaust manifold.

One question about this method as I may relocate my probe later on. You remove the u-pipe don't you? I would imagine if you didn't, the shavings would go into the turbo.

hmm i may move mine then i finally found where the last owner put it and its right by the turbo on the pipe that comes from manifolds......so its pretty far away from the head....:td:

JC-6.9 08-23-2010 06:36 PM

how much could this make my egts be off by? would it say its higher than it really is or lower?

DieselCrawler 08-23-2010 08:19 PM

temps will be higher then what ur gausge says.

u can unbolt the up pipe if it will come loose. many shops do it this way without unhooking uppipe.

JC-6.9 08-23-2010 09:15 PM

hmmmm....i'm not sure how my motor has survived this long then lol i've had the temps pretty high while towing 1100 most times....the probe isn't actually in the pipe its in the flange on the turbo itself.....i just swapped a zf 5 spd in it and i know i cannot unbolt the pipe or anything without dropping the trans and cutting up the floor again wich i would rather not do...maybe i'll just install another one

ya banks puts them on the DP. You can just cut the wire if you wish cause the probe is pretty f-in stuck from hot and cold temps. So just buy a new gauge and drill and tap the driver side exhuast manifold and bam your done lol
