7.3 idi parallel turbo
 

I wanna see what you guys think. I have been researching alot about parallel turbos. Ive talked to the various diesel shops around here and a few say yes it'll work a couple have said why bother and one said No. Im looking at setting up a turbo on custom headers on each side towards the front of the engine. Looking at at turbos for like 3.5 to 4.0 liter engines I live in a agricultural area and we have ag junk yards around here that i can get parts cheap. Do you think it'd be possible to make it run as a daily driver. I stumbled across a guy that did it to a powerstroke but it didnt run right. I think it was constantly fighting the computer. Im not sure why it ran like crap. I just want something different and functional.

You would need custom fabricated manifolds and have to keep the boost low. It could be done, but the gains will be minimal compared to the work involved.

I know its never gonna be a super power house. And that im limited in my boost numbers with the 7.3 idi . I just think it be something different and a very interesting conversation piece. The truck im putting the 7.3 in has limited space since the engine is close to the firewall So i thought this might be something that might work.

there was one a while ago that the guy made a custom intake manifold and had a 6-71 blower on top. sorta a waste and didnt add any power.

Yeah the blowers on detroits are not designed for boosting the engine more just pushin exhaust gases out of the cylinders. The tolerances on them blowers is horrible. I guess ill just have to try it and see if this turbo set up works.

I think it would be pretty sweet. :rocking: I always wanted to do something like that myself.

Just fab up a custom intake hat with dual inlets, make some custom headers with probably no more than T02 or T03 flanges, and find two turbos you can work with. Oil supply and return lines might be a drag to work with, especially with the forward mount design you are thinking of, but it shouldn't be too difficult. I'd mount a pyro on both headers, pre turbo unless you are worried about burning one off, and maybe even backpressure gauges. Then tune the turbos for even backpressure and EGT while limiting yourself to about 10 psi, unless you want to invest in some studs and low comp pistons, then you could probably push it to 20 psi peak...maybe. If you have the resources, the time, and most importantly the money, I'd say go for it! :tu: It truly would be a unique project and you never know how much you might like the results.

I dont remember where I saw this but someone has done it. It was on a pulling truck and it looked sweet.

He pulled pretty well in a video I saw of it. I really wish I could remember where I saw it now.

I have been kicking this idea around for about 3 or 4 years now. I was originally gonna try it on our old 6.2 suburban but realized it just wasnt worth trying to modify it anymore. Then ever since i got my 88 7.3 i decided to really start looking into more since i know their a stonger engine than the 6.2. Heres a link to the powestroke running parallels.

I would just put a turbo flange on the end of it instead of a ball socket. Ive got a friend that has a welding/ and machining shop that lets me use his place at night so between the two of us i think its possible to make it work.

This project will hopefully be kicking off here this summer when it gets warmer since i dont have a garage that big enough to work in. My 88 Ford is rusted beyond safe driving anymore. You go around the corner and the cab about falls off. Its a old farm truck and has never spent a night inside since it was new. Ill be putting my 79 Dodge Power Wagon W200 body thats in great condition my fords frame. making it twin/parallel turbo 5spd 4x4. Ill do all the engine mods with the body off so i got more room to work. Well thats the plan atleast for now.

Okay well to bring this back from the dead. I found a pair of turbos that were set up in parralel on a chevy 454. All i know is that they are a set of schwitzers. Do ya guys think they would work ok on the 7.3? Th price is right and i dont wanna miss out on them if they will work
