Fuel rail....shims and plugs

To all of the knowledgable people here,
What does a fuel rail shim and fuel plug do? What are the benefits and when do you need to do these upgrades?:humm:

Thanks,
Deputee

Ok short answer to this
fuel rail shim- benefits are it takes more pressure to make the fuel relief valve "pop off" or relieve pressure.
fuel rail plug- just as it sounds stops pop off from happening at all benefits- same as shim pretty much. Downfall- if for some reason your rail does need to relief it takes out the weakest link which can be expensive depending on what it takes out.
My recommendation shim it not much more trouble and its a lot safer

Im running the plug. Take thegood advice u dont want your weaklink to be your injectors or who knows what. I wouldn't recomend itjust like dodgeram said. i have not had no trouble (yet) i have talked to to many knowledgeable ppl such as dodgeram, lazer smith ,tc diesel and others. I will be pulling mine soon since I just got a good relief valve again. Just think like this you have 25k+ in yout rail if something went wrong and it spiked to 30k or what ever crazy number failure is likely to happen but where? It's up to u

Well thank you both. If I wasn't going to highly modify my truck, are these really necessary? I only plan on the the usual, 5" tbe, h&s tuner and egr/cooler delete, and s&b

my truck is still stock but i have customers with just a tuner that pop and wont seat back. the fix is shims or the plug. i have sold several plugs and never had a problem. you will know when you need one. :hellox:

Also 3 #4 washers and oddball metric nut are needed to shim but definitely the safest route compared to plugging have seen some nightmares with plugged rails come through a shop I help out at from time to time

Does anyone know what the actual gain is here...mpg/hp/tq? the kit sounds like the safe way to go and cheap as well.. H and S sells the kit for 15$. but I guess I am just wondering if there is any noticeable difference?

more pressure=more effeceincy=more HP/MPG though without some sort of programming device your not going to get much (if any) gain out of this custom tuning is where things like this shine :). more pressure=mist instead of drop upon injection. Hope this helps
