Trying to let my 6.7 breath....

Need some advice, I tried to look but had no luck finding a thread about air intakes for the 07.5-12 6.7. I've already decided on boost tubes (4") and intake horn (h&s) thinking about heat grid delete. Thoughts?

peters0756 04-24-2012 12:42 PM

If your in a climate that allows you to remove it then there is no harm in doing so. I don't here any good or bad either way on the removal though. I saw pictures on the web of the parts and it's clearly a larger and smoother opening without the grid but they never claim any improvement as far as I could tell. Also I'm guessing that you have already done the deletes?

1ton butcher 04-24-2012 03:45 PM

Yep. Full deletes. And I am in ak. But I have never been very happy with the throttle and they have an after market tb with heat grid in it. Factory hookups to

Whargoul 04-24-2012 05:50 PM

The heat grid is only for emissions, it will not affect your cold starting ability.

The stock air filter is very good. Get rd of the silencer, grid, EGR and DPF.
Changing the air filter will only increase how much dirt your engine eats, not performance.

jp_hotwheels 04-24-2012 06:14 PM

I love my S&B, running full deletes, program and FLO~PRO 4" turbo back, it screams...2011

coors_man_2005 04-24-2012 09:40 PM

Only for emissions?? I dont beleive thats right. Because if it was for emissions only when i start my truck the grid heater light would come on everytime i started it. It dont only when the temps are i would say 55 or below give or take. On cold mornings after the truck has warmed up and if it dont cool off it doesnt come on. (because its warm-- not cold) The grid heater from what i have seen takes place of glow plugs like the psd has. It is for cold starts in lower temps. It heats the air entering the intake and into the cylinders to help the start.

You are 100% wright sir! I knew this but wasn't going to start anything. I'm mainly looking at the air intake. Talked to a few people and I like the s&b. Seems to be the best quality at the best price. Plus the washable filter vs. the oem at 50$ a wack. Thanks for the input. I'll report back with a mpg update after mods.

coors_man_2005 04-24-2012 10:02 PM

i have read where the grid heater restricts air from the rear cylinders. im running afe i love it. i just run an outerwear on it. i just wraped panty hose around it helps make the cleaning easier. only thing i wish is i would have got a dry filter.

diesel pap 04-24-2012 10:08 PM

i have started my 08 in pretty cold weather without using the grid heater but the truck will miss fire pretty bad. it would have to be cold before it would not start. if you are in warmer climate, i dont think you would have any trouble. :hellox:

coors_man_2005 04-24-2012 10:28 PM

i started mine -25 and it choked and puked sounded awful. i dont think it would have started with out the heater.

this....:tu:

1ton butcher 04-26-2012 05:48 AM

So far all I've found up here is the wix filters nobody has a fram. I went with the s&b. Whole shabang for 300$. With scoop and prefilter. From what I've read and the people I've talked to the best way to get milage out of the 6.7 is to give it more air. I've already got a 5" turbo back exhaust so this is the next step naturally. Really eager to see how more responsive this new Throttle body will be. :rocking:

Its for emissions when the engine is cold. Ever notice old diesels smoke white in cold weather? Thats not condensation like gassers thats incomplete combustion. Heater grid helps get rid of that.

No, Cummins engines don't need glowplugs or heaters. The off-road/industrial versions don't have grids.

The shop I worked at had an old 94 Ottowa yard goat, turbo and jacket water intercooler but no heater grid or ether. Even with 26,000 hours and extreme abuse that thing had no problems starting in 0*f weather. Now when it got down into the negatives, it would take a shot of ether to get the initial fire going.

diesel pap 04-26-2012 06:57 AM

my 91.5 cummins will not start in cold weather without the aid of the grid heater.

This is not accurate information. The poster is in Alaska. He NEEDS a grid heater. It does not provide much resitriction and its benefits far outweigh its drawbacks.

Eddiebuntain 04-26-2012 12:55 PM

Hey Grrr, where do you get your filters, and what brand do you use?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Actually, open that up to everybody, where do you get your air filters, what brand do you use, and how much do they cost?:c:

Dr. Evil 04-26-2012 02:21 PM

I dont get mine here...but lots order from Geno's Garage - Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel Parts and Accessories genuine Fleetguard filters

Eddiebuntain 04-26-2012 02:48 PM

Sorry, I just realized I kinda hijacked the thread.:td: For related info that could be useful. :yeah:Anyway Geno's has Fleetguard listed at $25 and Mopar at $30, maybe shipping on top of that.

coors_man_2005 04-26-2012 08:28 PM

Our big 3 phase (cummins) generators at work have grid heaters. They are offroad/ industrial.

True. That is why I oppted for the new tb. It has a built in heat grid. While allowing more air flow.

peters0756 04-27-2012 11:36 AM

The grid heater is a cold start helper, not an emission part. It comes on any number of diesels in the off-road construction industry where there are no emission controls as well as older diesels without glow plugs. If your in the cold weather you need it to start, otherwise you can delete it. Since you are in Alaska I don't think it's a good idea.

Just an example....Local O'reilly has the Fram filter for 21.99...:c:

Little up date- oh and I checked around again. The Oriley up here in ak list a number for the cram but doesn't carry them yet. Any who.... S&b installed and it's great. Cruising down the road with about 11k I'm at 750 on egts. Installed the new throttle body with spacer and let me just say this is the best pedal I've ever had for an elec pedal. It really is comparable to a cable and the best part is that little hesitation you have when you let off or the dead spot if you feather it quickly is gone. Grid heater delete was easy and the wires plugged wright into new TB. Very happy camper!:rocking:
