High EGTs

Just installed my egt probe on the truck, on an 80 HP tune the truck says its hitting 1600 degrees @ 95mph. I have a S&B and a DPF delete so I would expect much lower temps... Is this normal or did I install the probe wrong or something. :humm:

Woody35 06-23-2009 08:08 PM

what rpm were you at 95 Mph. were you cruising at the speed or were you still acceralating. i think the probe has to be a half of an inch out in the pipe or something like that. dont quote me on this though. also were did you mount the probe

FarmDiesel 06-23-2009 08:11 PM

On the manifold, as per instructions from the EDGE manual

what were your RPMs at that speed

FarmDiesel 06-23-2009 08:20 PM

Cant remember exactly. I was more interested in the pyro :ohno:

Woody35 06-23-2009 08:23 PM

something is wrong because it shouldnt be that high. oh is your truck still doing a regen even though you took out the dpf

FarmDiesel 06-23-2009 08:26 PM

Hmmm. I would hope not, even though I think my delete kit is a POS (BADP) The edge is supposed to notify me of the truck entering regen as well :humm:

Woody35 06-23-2009 08:34 PM

i dont know cummins real well so i was trying to cover the basics. i would check on the regen. that could defeintely do it to your temps. high speed along with high revs plus with a regen will make crazy temps

FarmDiesel 06-23-2009 08:40 PM

Who knows. Maybe ill get a smarty and use it for the delete. Oh well. lets see if anyone else posts up that has had a simular issue. :pca1:

Woody35 06-23-2009 08:43 PM

yeah its really annoying me now why it would do that

FarmDiesel 06-23-2009 10:39 PM

Hope it isnt a bad install on the pyro... Would kinda suck to ruin my manifold :argh:

stkdram55 06-23-2009 10:59 PM

if your in it that hard at 95 that engine is gonna be workin pretty hard and pushing some fuel so it could be fine...i dont know if the new 6.7 run hotter then the previous models but that is a possibility:humm:

FarmDiesel 06-24-2009 01:57 PM

Yeah... But thats only with an 80 horsepower tune and plenty of airflow... what would injectors or a smarty do? 2000 degrees?:ouch:

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Anyone else have info? Kinda scared here. :hot:

brk126 06-24-2009 03:17 PM

mine will hit about 1850--1950 oon a hard pull around 115 mph runnin H&S 175 tune

dodgeram082500 06-24-2009 03:39 PM

WOW that is hot but as much fuel as the xrt adds it doesnt suprise me not that im trashing the xrt i do love the tuner my buddy has one

FarmDiesel 06-24-2009 03:42 PM

Sounds unhealthy.. :ouch:

cbrahs 06-24-2009 06:07 PM

it is the edge. I have not seen an edge on any dodge run cool. Mine lasted a week, got my smarty and dropped 150 degrees. It is not your truck or the manner in which you installed the probe. shed the edge and get a smarty.

FarmDiesel 06-24-2009 06:12 PM

I suppose it would be ok to keep the EDGE for gauges/turbo timer/ backdowns eh? Ive also heard people say use the EDGE's timing over the Smarty's, but I dont know about that.

cbrahs 06-24-2009 06:27 PM

Edge timing is conservative. Marco has done his homework on this one. I would ditch the edge and just get gauges and a smarty. I would not want to risk running the smarty on a timing level (odd numbers) and reach up to do something on the edge and hit a power level on that and add timing and BOOM.

FarmDiesel 06-24-2009 06:38 PM

Anyone know if I can take the Juice box out and let the Attitude act as an Outlook? If ya know what I mean :w2:

stkdram55 06-24-2009 09:27 PM

yeah you can run just the attitude monitor for guages...

FarmDiesel 06-24-2009 09:32 PM

Or maybe ill just Ebay it and get some normal gauges.... :argh: thats more work though :humm:

Begle1 06-24-2009 10:36 PM

Why are these things running so hot?

cbrahs 06-24-2009 11:25 PM

these engines run hot naturally due to the added injection cycle for emissions.

dodgeram082500 06-25-2009 12:33 AM

stupid epa but the good part is the pistons and other internals have coating on them that helps them handle the heat

Begle1 06-25-2009 03:45 PM

Isn't the added injection cycle only performed during active regeneration?

dodgeram082500 06-25-2009 03:53 PM

im not postive on that that be a good wuestion for marco or bob

Begle1 06-25-2009 03:59 PM

If burning or unburnt fuel was sent out the exhaust in common application, wouldn't that make EGR kind-of an explosive proposition?

Woody35 06-25-2009 04:14 PM

i would suggest water/meth injection for you guys running 1600F egts because that engine isnt going to last very long. i know cummins are strong and have that layer on the pistons but thats just too hot

No. Soot is partially combusted fuel, it will not burn explosively again. If it did then DPFs wouldn't exist!

Then you better stop all those engines from doing regenerations!

kmkdiesel 06-29-2010 10:44 PM

a stock 6.7 during regen will run 1500* down the highway. I have seen over 2000* on both 6.7's that I have had with no problems. If you wanna keep the edge and use it as guages that is fine, but you will probably get the urge to turn it up and run it stacked with the smarty, so probably not a good idea. Some of the edges have the option in them to run stock timing or edge timing, if you have one that you can choose from then put it on stock timing. 1600* on a 6.7 is really not that hot, they run alot hotter then the 5.9s. And I am pretty sure the 4th injection cycle is only on when the truck is in regen so it can inject the extra fuel needed to do the regen.

00CumminsMan 06-29-2010 11:11 PM

wil i had the same probly with my truck. I think it was because i had stock exhaust. What size exhaust you runnin on your rig

6.7 MoJo 07-05-2010 03:35 PM

That sounds really hot?? I have a lifted 08 on 38X15.50 with the pyro probe mouted right in the turbo flange where I would assume you would see the max temps right before the turbo wheel and running my Smarty on SW 5 I see around 900-1100 EGT in 6 gear cruising the highway around 60. The faster I "cruise" and higher the rpm the lower the temps I see...most of my back road 50 mph kinda stuff up and down hills I run in 5th and temps never exceed 900. When I hit the highway and cruise 80+ the egts drop and I use 6th gear....

Granted any pulls at WOT to 5th or 6th gear temps will jump, but I have not seen over 1200 EGT pullin WOT thru 5-6th gear to 80-90+.

Hope this helps???
