In the vernacular, "O-ring" describes machining circular grooves in the cylinder head around each combustion chamber's roof to accept a wire for partial imbedment (although copper is a common wire material used for SI engines, diesels should use a material such as 316SS or Inconel for longevity). The wire protrusion is designed to seal on either the head gasket's fire ring, or on the deck itself when the fire ring is water-jetted out of the HG on some applications.
"Fire ring" denotes an additional matching groove machined into the block, so the wire ring is clamped into both upper & lower grooves.
O-ringing has generally proven to be more reliable in CRs for a variety of reasons.
