Learn me: non-VGT turbo for 2nd gen swap

Hey, I'm new here and somewhat to modifying diesels in general. I've lurked around this board and other for a while for information and I've finally decided to make the 2nd gen manifold swap. I'm ready to order all the parts, I just can't seem to decide which turbo to go with.

As far as usage goes, the truck is a daily driver through winter and still sees regular usage during the summer, so it needs to be tolerable for city driving. Currently the most I tow is maybe ~8k? 4 place enclosed with 4 sleds or a flat deck with a vehicle on it, and both those are seldom. That doesn't mean I really want to sacrifice the useability of my truck. I plan on having it for a while and if my hauling needs change I don't want to be stuck with a giant turbo that leaves me unable to pull. Basically just looking to add a bit of power and reliability to the truck.

Currently the truck is stock other than deletes although I do plan on adding injectors (recommendations for these are welcome as well as I am completely lost. Thinking 125s or 150s? Depends on turbo I guess), FASS, ARP head studs, and maybe a CP3 if the set up warrants it.

Most common turbos I am seeing used with the 2nd gen swap are the s466 and s472, although I saw one guy online running an s372 but he never got back to me as to why he chose that over a 400 series turbo. From what I understand the lower the A/R the quicker it spools, but it loses out on top end power. I was thinking a .90a/r would suit the amount of city driving I do, but would it be really gutless once I'm into it a fair bit? I am also seeing that BatMo/DoubleBatMoWheel turbos spool a lot faster, is it really worth the added price or should I save the money and put it elsewhere?

Thanks for any help, hope to learn some cool stuff from this forum.

Your post says manifold, but your asking about a turbo??

Yes. As I said I am swapping my truck to a 2nd gen style manifold. I am just wondering what kind of turbo would be best suited for my uses as that will need to be upgraded with the swap.

i went with the 3rd gen bd 2pc manifold and silver 66 turbo. im running stock tuning stock injectors and tow 20k. no problem with spooling the turbo next if i had it to do over i would prolly step up a little on the turbo. but the 66 is perfect for what you want. i like the 3rd gen manifold swap because its a strait forward bolt and go swap. the 2nd gen your going to have a little bit of fab work but are nice conversions at the same time. :c:

contact tony at mighty diesel. he can hook you up with what your needing. great guy with great prices- - 877 354 7008
