Fuel Filter: Buyer Beware!!!
 

I thought that I'd post this in distaste of marketing schemes.:bat: Many of you, I'm sure, have already experienced this, but I felt I needed to disseminate this appropriately so someone doesn't get gypped like I could have. Plus, I need to vent a little bit.

So I just recently changed my fuel filter on the truck for the first time. When I went to buy it, they tried selling me an entire kit with the filter and housing. They were saying that the WIX filter would not fit without buying the WIX housing.:nope:It seemed very fishy to me, so I left the store, did some research, got under the hood and took some mental pictures of it. I went back to the auto parts store and asked to see the kit. It was a Cummins/Fleetguard housing with a Cummins/Fleetguard filter. They wanted 74 bucks for this kit! The filter was only 41 bucks (yes, I know; still a bit pricey, but I was in a hurry and way over due to replace it). It was exactly the same as the one under my hood. The ONLY difference is that it said WIX on it. Apparently, WIX makes the OEM filter for Cummins, and likes to screw people out of 33 bucks saying the Mopar marketed housing doesn't work with it. So, in conclusion, don't trust the auto parts store!(which I'm sure many of you already know this)

Same thing for us 5.9 guys. People run Wix, and they come apart due to an inferior glue. I'll spend the extra $5 to get a genuine Cummins (aka Fleetguard).

i run fleet guard i heard bad stories about wix filters that was the first fuel filter horror story but heard the same about a oilfilter coming apart and made it to the pump think we can imagine what happend next

But what stumps me is that the WIX filter actually says Cummins/Fleetguard on it.:humm: So does this make it any different from the one you get at the dealership, or is the same and just sold under a different name? I'm thinking about buying in bulk, so I save a little money; but I'm definitely not going to pay more for a filter just because it's marketed differently.I'm going to try and keep on a 10k mile interval with changing it. Is this good or should i do it more often?

My '07 had the Wix stock replacement 7um fuel filter in it for two years, no problem.

The various brands (Fleetguard, Wix, Baldwin, et al) may or may not produce certain products in their own facilities with the bulk of all automotive filters now being produced in the same factories in the Middle East, China, Mexico and elsewhere for resale by all the different brands. The only difference between many of them is the paint color and packaging used.

live in a town full of truckers and nobody had fleetguard that fit so I went with wix. Now does a fleetguard filter fit in a wix housing or the original housing? noted that the wix says fleetguard on it as well. Went to NAPA they are selling the same thing as other parts store, identical, one says fleetguard, one says wix.

and I had an old timer in the diesel engine building trade tell me if I got in the habit of changing the fuel filter same time as the oil filter I couldn't go wrong, 7500 to 10k was his recommendation.

As long as they are still flowing, filters filter better the longer they are installed.

Yeah!! Exactly my point. When I went to buy the WIX filter it said Fleetguard on it. Now I'm just going to figure out which one is the cheapest. NOW hopefully there wasn't any small differences that I didn't notice when I changed the filter, but it fit just like the OEM. The tabs were in the same position and the gasket was the same size. Just companies making money off the exact same product, I guess.
