Crazy emmission issues
 

Hi all,

The Truck was perfect for exactly one year. Since 10/15/12 the truck has been in the shop 8 times for a check engine light related to O2 sensor issues. They changed sensors, harnesses, etc, and lots of flash updates. Now they changed the O2 computer this week via a "Star case number". The 2'nd to last time they did a powertrain module update and all was good. They it happened again within 100 miles and when the check engine light went on the turbo started whining at modest power levels. By whining I mean it sounds like a small regional jet sitting on the runway. Even my wife asked "what is that noise".

I have a 5.9 in my boat, and have had other diesels in heavy equipment so I know the basics of how these things work, and I know a change in engine sound when I hear it. My turbo would hardly ever make noise unless pulling a heavy boat up a grade other than the normal deceleration noises.

The dealer tech is now suspecting the catalytic converter is the root cause and is also suggesting a new turbo. That makes sense cause if the converted is honked up it will probably drive the system crazy. I think the tech is dead on but Dodge is playing games.

Of course Dodge is sitting on their ass. Why? Because I missed the FL lemon law date in florida in October as it is 24 months, but the issues have been in play over a year ago. I wish I had paid more attention to the dates. I am sure I would be getting better attention.

Truck has only 22.3K miles.

I would agree with your thoughts as to the tech being correct and the powers at the upper end stalling or dragging their feet, most likely due to the expense of the repair. But in the grand scheme of things how much would it cost them if they lost the sale of just 2 or 3 trucks due to not taking care of the cust. . Good luck .
