'08 dpf del. h&s MPG'S STILL SUCK

Alright, bought my '08 in march. I'd heard everyone talking about their mpg gains when they did the dpf delete. Bought an H&S mini-max last month, and have seen no gains. I love the way it runs now,but I can't tell any difference even if I baby it around.I am not looking for a miracle, but would like to get better than 12mpg while im working.:dang::argh:
Does anyone have any suggestions?

baddodges 08-23-2011 06:44 AM

Get rid of the mini max and get a smarty.

Smarty doesn't work on a Powerstroke.

Did you delete the dpf?

Luke

Farmboy 2.0 08-23-2011 09:20 AM

Im with Luke? Did you do a full dpf delete on it? Or is the dpf still in the truck? If its in the truck still you will not see any big mileage gains at all.

Diesel Dawgs Performance 08-23-2011 10:59 AM

You need to delete the DPF and run their DPF Delete Program. You will see a difference.

Luke

farmerdude 08-23-2011 01:33 PM

Already Did the DPF DELETE!:argh: Did it the day i put the tuner on.:dang:

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Have had it on for about a month now.

NO, I have not done the egr."yet"? Have heard you need to do an external WG.I don't know if I want to get that deep into this thing? This truck is not my toy. I need reliability and MPG'S more than huge POWER.:w2: OH BTW guy's thanks a bunch.

Do you do the tunes for the mini max,or does H&S write them? Having a very minor tranny issue also.(I do not like the RPM range it shifts into 5th lock.):humm:

farmerdude 08-24-2011 10:38 PM

OK guy's took a little road trip this afternoon. OKC and back (300 miles),and got 15.6 by my pencil. That's better but still not quite what I was hoping for.:humm:

AGAPETUS 08-27-2011 11:07 PM

Your hubs are on auto and not locked?

Scott, what about the "easy tune" it sounds a little more my style. The one I have seems to me to really overfuel.(TOO much smoke) The tranny shifts into 5th around 50mph and 1500rpm it lugs hard, and EGT's run hot until it hits 1800rpm unless I really baby it along. EGT's run about 1100 to nearly 1300 then drop back, and that is not pushing on it.:humm:

Diesel Dawgs Performance 08-30-2011 11:16 PM

Did you install a dpf delete pipe or full turbo back exhaust.

I believe it is the race tune. 80,120,175,250?? I was wandering about their "EASY tune" can you tell me anything about it?:humm:
Oh BTW I usually run on the MILD setting, and there is still too much smoke. I know it needs to smoke a little, but not a black CLOUD behind me when i'm not WOT.

My stock 6.4 gives my 12.5 to 14 MPG in the city hand calculated, & I drive my truck like I stole it:humm:

Man,thats what mine gets workin. I do alot of 1 to 5 mile runs while doing my farm work everyday. Everyone that has one around here that has done the dpf delete is getting 16-20mpg. I try not to drive mine like I stole it,but getting out of a manual trans into an auto it is REALLY hard not to.:w2:

73JER 09-04-2011 09:09 AM

I get around 14 in town. Last week on a 2 hour highway drive I got 19 mpg avg. No complaints here.

farmerdude 09-12-2011 09:22 PM

I was wondering, if my EGR valve is sticking how bad would that affect mpg's?:humm:

Mdub707 09-13-2011 09:35 AM

On what, a 6.4? Why do you think it's sticking? It could severely effect the way the truck runs, but this really isn't as big of a problem on the 6.4's as it was on 6.0's.

You can do an EGR valve blocker plate with no problems, provided you have the tuning to match. You can NOT delete the EGR coolers however, without doing an external gate. Well... you can, but you wont like the outcome. The EGR coolers serve double function on the 6.4 as the wastegate.

A hot tuned 6.4, with a single turbo kit and external gate would be a really awesome daily driver.

Mpg's havent increased what i had heard other guy's have. It smokes sometimes and does not smoke others.(under like driving conditions.) and yes it is a 6.4.:humm:

I have heard and read about the egr being the waste gate. DUDE you don't know how bad I want to do a big single TURBO! I dont drag race this thing or sled pull,so don't need all that boost an the low end. I think it would be great pulling a trailer down the highway.:rocking:

AGAPETUS 09-22-2011 07:01 PM

I have not done the DPF delete yet, I am getting 13 to 14 combined where I live. Mostly city like driving, I get her up to 60 and then have to slow down again. She is still under warranty and I don't know if I want to do the DPF delete while still under warranty, don't know how hard it is to put everything back on if I have to take to Ford. Wonder if I should just take it to the Diesel mechanic that changes my oil and stuff and say screw the warranty. :humm:

Forrest Nearing 10-11-2011 08:22 AM

that bully dog tuner already voided your warranty. might as well do it right :D

Farmboy 2.0 10-11-2011 10:44 AM

What tunes do you have on it? Are you running the hot damn 300 tunes or the standard 0,80,160,250hp? Do you have a air intake? Any codes?

Scott, Standard tunes, no intake mods, only code it has ever thrown was vehicle overspeed (OOPS!,LOL). I downloaded the new updates from H&S yesterday. The lie'o'meter is showin 14.5 which is a little better than it has been. We'll see when I run this tank of fuel through it.
P.S. Have you had anyone have trouble with EGT sensor? My gauge on the mini-max goes stupid when I'm on the gas, then seems to work fine when cruising down the road.:humm:

Edroe 12-20-2011 02:37 PM

What tune do you all use to get the best fuel mileage? I also have a 2008 6.4, H&S Minimax, downpipe back DPF & Cat delete 4" SS exhaust.

Man, I cannot tell but about 2-3 tenths difference between any of them. I get 12-13 short run/working,and 15-17 hwy.:argh::dang:

Edroe 12-20-2011 10:33 PM

Yes, I got 15 going to Michigan (350 mi) & get almost that on short trips, I tried all the tunes I had loaded & watched the lie o meter, it didn't seem to make much difference on any of them, running close to the speed limit with the cruise on. I was hoping for better mpg but it's great to have the power if needed.

Duddy 02-06-2012 07:42 PM

i did the full delete this saturday morning and put on 500 miles with four sleds and three buddies in tow. ran the mild tune from h&s and rolling 75 got 18mpg on comp and 15.8 by hand, wasnt nice to it at all with it being the first run on the tunner.

however last monday the egr valve failed and the passageways for air flow were nearly clogged, just throwing it out there havnt dealt much with 6.4s yet.
