Boosting Mileage In The 6.4

A friends brother has a 6.4 and was wondering what mods everyone is doing to boost mileage. Which programers, intakes and exhausts work better.

JON 03-15-2008 11:17 AM

Well

Right now the best way to do it is get a tuner that can turn off the regen, right now the 2 that I hear the most about are the KEM tuner and the Spartan Diesel Perf tuner. These 2 are way ahead of the rest. Others have tuners but dont eliminate the regen as far as I know. Along with the turning off of the regen remove the dpf. But remember, that is against the law! Some dealers will frown upon it but most have seen 20mpg or more after they did it. Its funny, The government mandated these systems to cut down on emissions but they use twice the fuel, you tell me how doubling your fuel miliage by removing there crap is bad for the environment!

Thanks!

They Gave Me An Additive To Try - It Added About 2MPG Highway, Ironically Worked.

Ford dealer here says to wrap them up tight, winter front year round. Will let you know if it helps. What's the dpf??

Well, Gee Mr. Wizard....
It is an additional item in line on the exhaust system that helps trap soot and other material that would normally be released into the atmosphere. The trapped particles are then burned off during the regeneration cycle. High exhaust temps are used to perform this. That is the reason for Fords louvered dual tips. They are used to assist cooling the exhaust system and pull cooler air around the tips.

I am sure I don't have all the details listed. I haven't read up extensivly on the new emissions regs. I hope it is a long time before I own a vehicle that has them.

Diesel Dummy 03-23-2008 08:28 AM

Well just tell him to put a cummins in that should help!!!! Just had to, sorry, ill shut up now LOL

RodZZilla 03-23-2008 12:22 PM

His brother would agree with that.

JON 03-24-2008 10:27 AM

Some dealers could possibly VOID your warranty if a problem occcurs.

Patrick@DPP 07-01-2008 11:13 PM

The SCT system is getting you to about 18 mpg. The Spartan system will get you to about 20 mpg. The Spartan system will turn off the DPF in all tunes. No one else does. In the last couple weeks we have sold many of both with no problems from either. With the Spartan system he can also do a 270 hp tune for extra cabbage. I personally like the Spartan system better for the fact that all tunes are DPF delete.

stack_boy 07-02-2008 04:06 PM

most of the time the stealership will make a fuss about the dpf gone and about how its against the law but as far as voiding the warranty they have to prove that particular product or piece of equipment caused the problem.

Patrick@DPP 07-02-2008 08:59 PM

Just put it back in and tune the truck to stock. Problem solved.

Judd.McClure 07-09-2008 04:43 PM

Then you need to explain why your tail pipe is also covered with soot.
:humm:

Patrick@DPP 07-10-2008 12:06 AM

Spray it down with purple power and rinse, repeat if needed. If you did that everytime you washed your truck it would come off easy.

underware: brown in back, yellow in front. Any other questions?

Life isn't this hard lol.:poak:

SmokinPiney 07-25-2008 03:32 PM

We just picked up an 08 F450 6.4 dump body at work! It's one helluva built truck but holy crap on the mileage! The dash is readin 7.8mpg avg! Will it improve a bit once broke in?

1slick1 08-06-2008 11:29 PM

Just read up on the tuners for the 6.4

I was surprised by all the feed back on the turners recommended for the 6.4. One is off the market (the KEM) and the other (Sparten) has some major bugs. Are there any out there that are reliable and won't void my warranty??

Just bought my new 2008 F450 Crew Cab 4x4 dually Fully loaded and I need a little advise on upping the HP and mileage.

I already have a 1975 F-250 4x4 400 hp balanced 390 4x4 18" lift 40" mudders, 2004 4x4 F-250 Crew Cab 8" lift 40" mudders, 2002 F350 Crew Cab 4x4 dually Fully loaded, chipped, 1999 F350 4x4 chipped and over 300,00 miles on the original engine and trans., and several lesser F250's and a Ford Tractor. As as my photo shows I've owned at least 6 other Ford trucks of various years and models.

Let's just say I'm into Ford Trucks.

InfernoJoe 07-06-2011 07:58 AM

I have and 09 6.4 F350 -with a SCT, deleted all the DPF, cat, exhaust, intake, and on the Extreme program was getting about 20.5mpg - on the Performance setting I am getting 16.5, and on the Tow setting pulling a 27' camper about 14.2MPG

Mdub707 07-06-2011 08:31 AM

I'd go SCT with Innovative Diesel tuning, but there isn't such a thing as a tuner that wont void your warranty, no matter what any of them say. Your warranty work is up to your dealer, some are mod friendly, others are not. You simply will not get good mileage out of a 6.4 with the DPF still on there, you need to take that off and get the tunes to go with it for the best mileage. :c:

What are the major bugs with the spartan. My cousin has a 6.4 and was keening towards this tuner. I haven't looked into it to far but I always heard good things.

dickinson 06-08-2012 07:50 PM

can you do a DPF delete without a tuner that is capable of it? leanred the wrong way that bully dog is not the way to go!!!!

Mdub707 06-11-2012 09:43 AM

No you can not. You need something that will shut off the regen cycles.

I'll be looking for a tuner soon, & remove my DPF

You got my number :c:

3brorce 07-07-2012 01:19 PM

With my IDP Livewire I did not gain much mileage but that is probably because I cannot lay off the pedal.

Route66Diesel 07-05-2013 07:32 PM

We've got some tunes to help out the guy w/his emissions components in place, so if you want to go the route of better mileage and not having to remove the DPF, we can help you with that.

I know, most are going to say you can never get good mileage w/the regen, but you can. On our shop truck, we are down to regeneration every 650-700 miles . . . during regeneration you will see 5-8 mpg and it typically lasts 10-20 miles . . . over the course of 650-700 miles, this is really a small blip on the radar and is easily lost in the error of calculating mileage. Our shop F450 w/4:30 gears has seen 16mpg on highway with all emissions components in tact with a tune that makes 400HP at the tires.

We do have higher HP tunes, but the additional air flow at the higher HP levels forces a regen much sooner. Regen on these trucks is triggered by a high pressure drop across the dpf, or 700 miles . . .whichever comes sooner.

Its not for everyone, but for those who don't want to mess with the legalities involved, its a good option.

lilwezel1 01-14-2014 06:01 PM

how much for the spartan tuner?

gunman41mag 01-14-2014 08:34 PM

With the H & S XRT PRO tuner, i'm getting 14.6 MPG in the city, but i driver my truck hard:humm:

Wakita 03-30-2014 11:54 PM

I put in a H&S Tuner with a DPF delete, run it on hot, in my F450 I top out at 14MPG

DPF Operations

I have an 08' 6.4 Powerstroke with 145K mi. Truck runs like a scalded cat. I put about 20K miles/yr on it. High school and college rodeo will do that.
I recently replaced a failed exhaust gas temp sensor, the middle one, but I understand this is to be expected.
My question is that since I replaced the sensor, the "cleaning exhaust filter" message appears for about four seconds then goes away. Used to be that the cleaning cycle would come on for about 5 minutes if driving on the highway. Occasionally smoke would ward off tailgaiters, but that usually only lasted a few seconds.
Is the short duration normal? Is my DPF really getting cleaned? Or is it going into regen mode but something is kicking it back out again?
If there is already a thread regarding this issue, ignore my rant, but someone please point me in the right direction.
Thanks
