96 6.5 turbo diesel more performace any suggestions>?

I have just purchased a 96 1 ton regular cab long bed 6.5 4x4. It is stock except its straight piped. It has 180,000 miles.I wanna make it smoke and give it some power what would be best investment to do this

Since nobody has really posted here yet...

With the 6.5 you won't get much smoke, and if you get a lot of smoke there is something wrong.

I would suggest getting a reflashed computer since you already have opened up the exhaust. A couple places to check are HeathDiesel, KennedyDiesel, SSDiesel... to name a few. I have a HeathDiesel GL4 and I love it!

i would also like to know if there is any way i could install a fuel mod on it or anything like that?

FastCR 05-26-2009 08:18 AM

thats basically what reflashing the ECM does. You can get your intake to breathe a little better too. No one makes anything really great for an intake but if you crawl around there are a lot of different ways people have done it on here.
Welcome to the site. I think heath has the hottest chip right now.
Oh yeah, when you get to the point on performance that you need more than ~10psi of boost, intercool it, you can put a bigger turbo on it. But for starters the reflash and intake breathing would be the first things to do. If your running that mileage on stock injectors too you definitely want to change them, they are only good for about 100k.
Oh, and get gauges before/when you reflash it. Gotta have gauges.

thanks i was looking at purchasing gauges next. Then i think the reflashed computer was next. but thanks i will ask if i have any more questiions

6.5 Turbo Performance

Is anyone running an electric fan in place of the stock fan with blades? The stock blades take a lot of power to turn---wind resistence. I know racers do this to pick up a considerable amount of horsepower. Is this practical based on anyone's experience???

Turbine Doc 12-22-2012 01:15 PM

No gain to be had from electric fan, plus will not move the volume of air required to keep the 6.5 cool, best bet is a retuned fan clutch, plus the composite fan blade from a Dmax.

Is an Electric Water Pump a Good Performance Mod?

Not sure if anyone makes an electric water pump for the 6.5???? It would seem like a good mod to move more water and not make the engine have to do all the work. Do you have any experience with this mod?

acesneights1 01-01-2013 07:06 PM

The 99+ Spin on Hub Waterpump is the best waterpump.Don't know about electric.
Duramax guys use them because it's an easy fix compared to changing a waterpump on a Max..
A 6.5 is not a performance engine like a Cummins or DMax. You could spend thousands and still end up with less that 300hp.
JMHO.
A reflash and 4 inch exhaust makes 'em run pretty good though. Just watch temps.

Thank you

Thank you for the advice. It is well taken...and those mods are on the way. Happy New year!

Dont forget about a better turbo. The stock turbo is a huge restriction and will only harm performance, also you wont get the full potential out of the turned ecm

Does anyone know of a better remote PMD solution for the 6.5. I'm looking for a better fix than simply putting in new PMDs. On my third one and getting tired of being stranded in the middle of no where.

Yeah shit can the DS4 and put a DB2 on it. either that or carry a spare PMD. I don't care what one you buy or where you moyunt it. It's a roll of the dice. I have had the Heath Diesel one fail in 2 years and I had a stock one on the IP last 4. You just never know. I would stay away from Flight Systems. The old black Standynes are still the best IMHO.

Start your own thread in the regular 6.5 section and we will try to help you.

i am also looking for some added performance, i want to put the chip in it but my truck has 480000kms. Do you think it will damage the engine if i do chip it?

acesneights1 01-24-2013 05:13 PM

That is alot of miles to go pushing it. I wouldn't...

6.5bigredmonster 01-25-2013 07:43 PM

ya thats what i thought, i will just do the 4'' exhaust and intake

turbodiesel123 09-07-2014 06:53 PM

there is a way I know of to make it smoke a bit more that doesnt hurt it much but if you run it with the switch on for long the engine will heat up
