Thoughts on K&N Air Filters

Hey guys so I want to see how everyone feels about k&n cold air intakes I have had one in for about 3 months I have been getting the wrench light coming on ever so often when blasting up large hills and my turbo gets an over boost condition could be turbo sticking the mechanic at ford told me k&n was shit and I should go back to stock what do u guys think??? Do u think the k&n could be causing the turbo over boost code?

I don't like K & N, heard too many stories about dust & dirt going thur it:humm:

K&N is trash. I stopped using them years ago on my race four wheelers, because of the dirt they let in. I can't imagine how much worse it is with a forced induction motor.

I prefer AFE proguard series, they're 7 layers of filter (K&N is typically 5) and they're a dry filter, so no need to use any oil and worry about it messing up the mass air flow.

I am an avid K&N HATER.

Just looking at K&N, 5yr warranty as opposed to an AFE with a lifetime warranty ... speaks for itself

So the next question, is there a direct replacement filter (dry) for the k&n? I want to drop mine as well, came with the truck, and now needs to go.

I have a AFE PRO DRY S drop in for my 2008 6.4:humm:

I put an AiRaid into my filter box right after buying mine in 2006, no issues. I didn't go for a full CAI because they were ALL a box replacing a box.

I am with Karls03 and the Airaid filter :tu: that filter being what I have on my pickup. I have head good things about the AFE :hellox:

There is nothing but horror stories from very reputable shops I have spoken with. They were all unanimous in their dislike for the K&N :td::dang::argh::ouch::scare2::s:

Yes, you should be able to get a dry filter drop in setup to replace any K&N.

Is there any conclusive proof of k&n failires in diesels? Or is it like the '5000 mile, synthetic' only myth that is slowly morphing into 'fact'?

My point being that I have used k&n sucessfully for over 20 years. This includes my bad ass 302 that has seen nitrous with TWO k&n filters, a 14x3 and a lid filter.

I'm NOT saying k&n are the end all of their field. But I am saying 'they' are usually wrong and self education goes a long way. 'They' told me 6-Ohs were a money pit and to avoid at all costs...
