questions on new injectors

So a friend of mine is heading to afghan in a few weeks and leaving me with his truck to do exhaust and probably injectors, he said he's wanting to run around 50hp injectors and dual 4inch from cat back, then taking it to local shop and having headstuds and egr delete on it, so my question is, how hard is it to do injectors? Is it like the 7.3? And also will he have to get bigger turbo? He's running a predator (I believe) programmer and usually runs on the 60hp setting

Hell no the injectors are way easier than 7.3s by far easier than a 7.3s, 10mm semi deep swivel socket 12mm semi deep swivel socket 6 inch 3/8ths extension and mini air ratchet will get the valve covers off. youll need a T30 for the oil rails, and a T40/45 for the hold down bolts. Be sure you run those suckers home i dont have the specs right in front of me but usually i run em in with an air ratchet and then check with a regular ratchet to make sure theyre torqued to german torque specs-Güdntite.

Ive yet to have one pop out. or hold down back off.

Sweet, so any special way to pull em off? When I changed em in a 7.3 I had a piece of all thread with a nut welded on it to pull em out, so does he need to up grade the turbo with injectors or will stock turbo work fine?

Once you undo the clamp you can pull them out with your fingers, they come out super easy, almost too easy.

Haha alright, so which are some of thee better injectors to run? And does anybody know if the turbo needs upgraded also or not?

Hope he knows a good trans guy to keep rebuilding that torqueshift running a predator with bigger sticks.

I'd contact warren diesel for injectors, best bang for the buck. Hypermax is also good, or call Innovative Diesel up, they have a lot of options. I'd go warren myself, you can find him on PSA.

It's always a good idea to run a matching turbo to the injectors, but those aren't exactly huge, so stock will work. A powermax would be a decent upgrade for a daily driver and they're only about $1200.

I wouldn't waste my money personally unless he's planning on getting custom tunes for that thing. With the predator it's going to be a hot, smokey, headgasket popping, trans frying pig.

I've tried talking him out of running that thing and going sct but that's what he wants to run and he's dead set on it and injectors, the guy that's doing head studs is also planing the heads and new gaskets, so stock turbo should be good with only 50hp injectors? I'm letting him decide what he wants to do with info and I'm doing the work,

50hp doesn't really tell us anything. Those are cummins terms. We actually use a volume to dictate the size of our injectors. Stockers are ~ 135cc... first step up is 155cc, then 175's, 185's, 190's 205's 225's etc.... 155 is a good upgrade yes. Stock turbo will work.

Anyone he calls to order injectors from is going to laugh at him when he says he's running the predator. Back when there weren't many tuner options, some people ran those, and they were often referred to as the "pukinator's" since they were notorious for leaving one of the largest star patterns on the top of the piston I've ever seen and thus popping headgaskets like crazy.

If he did nothing else other than get rid of that and buy an SCT, he'd already notice an HP improvement. That, and it would be safer.

So when I replace these, after I pull em out do I just slide new ones in or do I bump the ignition to get extra fuel/oil out of the injector port? And when I get injectors all I should have to do is just put the new o rings on em right?

bobfbigman 01-21-2012 09:11 PM

You probably could bump the ignition but make sure to disable the fuel pump first or it will fill it up even more, would also have to be careful about all the oil that is going to come out of the oil rails, Iv'e used a blower nozzle with the air compressor, put a rag over the hole or you might get a diesel shower.
