Keep stacks, or go with cool duals?

5 Attachment(s)
I've been contemplating getting rid of the stack setup and going with the MBRP cool dual setup. I like the stacks. I like the way they sound, like the way they look, BUT I would like a little bedspace back and would like a toolbox again. I could lose the stacks, slide the veggie tank farther forward, and put a toolbox over it. I have kind of been wanting to change it up a bit anyways, and now I have a chance to trade my stacks straight for the cool duals. Now that I have the chance to do it, I'm second guessing it. Thoughts? Opinions?

Pics for a somewhat comparison...

I would do neither, myself. Stacks rob room from the box, attract attention, and depending on the type, let rain water in. That water mixes with the soot, and then it gets sprayed all over your truck when your run it. I also think there is nothing "cool" about duals. There is one turbo outlet, so what's the point of duals? If one had twin turbos, then duals would makes sense to me. My $0.02.

Your stacks look good, I say keep them. I don't care for the other exhaust your considering.

I like duels. I wanted a duel kit, but didnt want to flip the bill. So I went with a 5 inch super truck. I'm thinking a 7 inch tip. I just wanted to be different. Everybody and there brother is running a 4 inch or 5 inch single exit behind the rear wheel.

I'm also comtemplating buying another stick of 5 inch and converting mine into duel super truck, with 5 inch or 6 inch tips.

duals are cool a buddie of mine had em, you just need some decent tips on em, he went from duels to stacks,

Duel? As in engaging in combat? :tttt:

I personally have never been a fan of stacks, there's no "real" need for them and I'm all about if it has not purpose then it's not needed. I realize the stacks are "needed" for drags but how many running stacks are drag trucks? It's a fad just like anything else. I for one use my pickup for what it is intended for...utilitarian purposes. I vote for a good 4" to a 5" tip that's not too flashy. Better to be a sleeper than a tool with a POS IMO.

Actually they are needed in some cases when hauling livestock. Nieghbor had an 7.3 f350 with a straight pipe exhaust using the stock location. He hauled sheep. On the long hauls he would find a few sheep dead in the front corner of the trailer near the exhaust pipe. he added this stack that stood a foot above the cab to remedy the problem. But yes, a large number of people around here just have them for looks.

off topic: mike, what size tires are those in the current pics?

Mdub707 06-27-2011 10:40 AM

315/70/17's. Going to be getting a 35x12.5x17 or 18 real soon though.

If I do the cool duals, the tips are going to be tucked tight and using black tips. Still not sure which way to go. Obviously there is no "real" need for the stacks... but they sound killer. Drag racers need them in some cases and so do sled pullers. It's in the rules. Sure would suck to have a turbo fall apart and a turbine piece come flying out the side exit exhaust at a million miles an hour towards a crowd of people.

papachuck 06-27-2011 04:41 PM

Mike, I have the cool-duals, I couldn't do stacks because my 5th wheel would have hit them. I like the duals as it tends to split the exhaust sound (think stereo) If you want we could meet up sometime and you can see for yourself.

The stacks look badass, I say keep em:tu:

Having hauled stock ranging from horses to turkeys, the only time anything has died it was a result of smothering. My guess is it's not exhaust but the stock piling up on themselves. Unless the fella spent an inordinate amount of time idling in which I say, shut the damn truck off. Just sayin, I've been around the block a time or twelve and have never had a problem. Not saying you're wrong but in my eyes they're nothing more than a cosmetic item on anything other than a drag pickup or a tractor.

smokin-but-not-Broken04 07-28-2011 07:55 PM

I say stacks look real goodmade some stacks out of 5 in kept them for about 4 months then just got tired of having to tie everything I hauled up against the tailgate so I put a six inch tip right where the bed starts in front of the passenger side wheel sounds like a damn jet I love it who knows how long it will last I switch it up to keep myself from being bored I say stacks but realize they are a pain.:c:

PowerstrokeTech87 09-26-2011 10:27 PM

KEEP THE STACKS!!!!!!!!!!

You have no idea how badly i wanted to take it home and terrorize my neighbors.
I want to get the engine and tranny out of a wrecked 2 wheel drive and stuff it all into a 50s pickup and run stacks... have a cool hot rod.

Cowboy Cadillac 10-04-2011 10:25 PM

I like stacks and I think they look good on most trucks. That being said I also think they are a huge waste of bed space. Leave the stacks to the "Hey Look I'm a bad a$$ highschool kid" and go with the duals.

Love my MBRP dual setup...

Karls03 10-11-2011 01:16 PM

I have a single straight pipe (3.5" dp, 4", to a 5" tip), no resonantor, no cat, no muffler, no problem! I don't do stacks because I use a topper. Although that thing has to sound B.A. when you stomp it with the stacks. If your welding skills are good, you could notch that tool box to work with the stacks.

At this point if I put the toolbox back in, it would be mostly for looks, since there is a 51 gallon fuel tank directly behind the stacks! I'm still thinking this all over and not 100% sure which way I want to go. You're exactly right, when I step on the throttle going down the road, the noise is just too good to give up.

Karls03 10-12-2011 11:57 AM

My friends were joking with me one day, told me I should do stacks through the topper, using stainless steel rings to prtect the fiberglas. I told them I didn't want it to look like some hillbilly cabin. :scare2:

Mdub707 10-12-2011 11:59 AM

I've seen that done before believe it or not, it didn't look too bad. It might look a little funny with black smoke rolling out of the top of the shell, but interesting none the less.

Ok, leave them in place and drill/tap a small hole in the low point. During wet weather, remove the plug and you don't have that wet soot spraying into the air. Or rivet in a flapper door at the bottom of the slash cut.
I'm assuming getting water/snow in there is your reason for possibly wanting duals. That or you're like me and can't leave anything alone!

95powersmoker 10-12-2011 01:02 PM

I like the stacks on yer truck... I say leave em. The hole is already there...

Captainharley6.0 10-12-2011 02:09 PM

Keep stacks, or go with cool duals?

Thats a tuff call.... Both are bad ass setup.. I wont go with stacks on mine i use the bed of my truck a lot. Id say if the stacks are affecting your everyday practical use and you can trade square go for it! On the other hand not sure of sound difference between stacks and mbrp exhaust.....im using 4" straight pipe noe thinking of putting muffler back in.. On factory tune sounds good but if tuner is turned up its earsplitting.
You have some thinking to do bud!!!

I just can't leave it alone. I could care less about the water, and definitely not doing flappers! Snow is no problem. Rain only affects it if it rains hard, and I get on it it right away. If I start it up and just drive normal it really wont spray any out, it will evaporate if I let it idle long enough. I mainly wanted to get a little bedspace back and some of the toolbox. Right now I can't even fit the toolbox over the tank either. If I lose the stacks, I can slide the fuel tank farther forward, cut the bottom of my toolbox out and slip it over the fuel tank, so it would conceal my fill point on my tank, and get me some usable toolbox space aside. Right now, the toolbox simply wont fit with the stacks as the bottom of the toolbox would hit the wheel wells...

This is true. I saved the piece I cut out though, I can tack it back in, and then have my buddy re-spray bed liner over that area, probably never even know it was gone. Not really concerned at this point, the fuel tank would cover the hole too.

The stacks are actually a little quieter than the straight pipe exhaust I had before, BUT it's a deeper tone and the noise in the cab is greatly increased. It gets LOUD inside the cab, even with the windows up. You can NOT carry on a conversation with a passenger when towing a trailer. At least not accelerating up to speed. Once up to speed it's not bad. You hit a hill or something towing something heavy, you're not talking to the passenger until you crest the hill. It sounds amazing though...

Yeah forgot to mention that also towing is a whole new sound lol thats why i think i have to put the muffler back in :( i like the extra whistle tho !! Maybe a mbrp dual would be an inbetween for me! Id say duals for you as well sounds like the tool box would be great as im putting one on as well. Id say the duals straight piped can get the sound up as well !!!

:nice: Having done plenty of hauling I can say I have never had or heard of death from diesel exhaust, crowding yes though. I have idled the truck at rodeos for upwards of an hour and been in the trailer/sleeper and never even smelled more than a quick whiff if the wind blew just right.
The only reason I went with the fender stack was I use my bed for its intended purpose (and think bed stacks look terrible, IMO any truck that could afford to lose a foot of bed space wasn't being used as a truck anyways and is just a commuter car with bigger tires) but I had to go up with the exhaust because I didn't like having EVERY trailer I haul with constantly soot stained. I tried dumping it out the side behind the passenger door but couldn't take the drooooooonnnnnnnneeeee:scare2:

So long story slightly less long, go with duals.

Dirty Detroit 10-18-2011 03:10 PM

if you decide to do duals pm me with how much ya would want for the stacks set up:tu:
