No crank 2003

Hello. I have been trying to figure out my truck since Friday. There is a long story behind this, but I have not driven the truck since 2014, when the HPOP failed. To make a long story short, I was driving it back from the garage. It ran fine on the highway and in town. I stopped and started it about a half dozen times before getting home. After about an hour, while it was still warm, I turned the key, and there was nothing. I could hear the relay, and all the other sounds it would usually make when the key was turned, but no start. I mistakenly thought it may be corrosion on the starter connections, but in taking them off, destroyed the solenoid case, which led me to remove the starter. I tested the large lead for current, and it was there. I had my son turn the key while I put a test light on the small wire, and there was nothing. I then checked the length of wire from the connector on the fender to the starter, and it was fine. I then tested the ignition side of the wire with my test light, but it did not light when I turned the key. I am thinking that there is a problem between the ignition switch and the fender connector,. I checked the fuses such as the starter fuse, and they look fine. I think I hear the relay click as well when I turn the key. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. This truck has been worked on extensively by mechanics, before I got my hands on it, so I don't know if its a related problem or not. I did notice a couple of things that may or not affect the starting. The cab to frame strap is rotted off on the passenger side, so I am replacing that anyway. I also noticed that the tow/haul light on the end of the gearshift was flashing as I was driving home. I am not sure it is even working now since it kept flashing no matter how many times I pressed the knob. Could this be related to a problem with the neutral safety switch which may be causing the issue? I have looked for it but have no idea where it is.

hello I have the same problem. Did you fix it?

Yes I did fix it. I meant to post the end result, but later forgot.

I researched it, and found one post somewhere about a similar situation.

To make a long story short, as I remember it, the fan clutch shares the same circuit as those to the starter and to the transmission. If the fan clutch is faulty, those other two items will not work. All I needed to do was disconnect the connector at the top of the fan shroud for the wire that leads to the fan clutch. Once I did that the truck started and drove normally. Now I have been driving ever since with the fan clutch unplugged, but I have a new one on order so that I can replace it. Although I could see no problems with the wiring harness that leads to the fan clutch, apparently in some cases, the fan blades can chop the wire.

I hope this helps.

Thank You! I will look for the disconnect tomorrow. I use the torque app and the other day drove with it running. I had no trans temp and no coolant temp.

By the way , when you drove home with the tow haul light flashing, did it start out in a high gear? Also not engaging overdrive?

I heard of the fan chewing the wire as a possible cause. Keeping my fingers crossed when I try tomorrow, maybe Sunday if its raining.

Thanks again four barrel

Went out this morning and disconnected the fan. Nothing still won't crank. will check all the grounds now.

If thats all good I'm going back to installer off TFT sensor and wire harness. Maybe they were bad or put in wrong
