Best mods for pulling

Ok guys getting ready to buy a 1993 doge 350 dually extended cab long bed dually with the 5spd. Gonna use the truck to hook in the local work stock class, and street drive some. The truck is in great shape it's bone stock so I was wondering what would be the best mods to do to this truck for sled pulling???? Besides a p-pump conversion, that most likely will come in a year or so,most likely it will become a dedicated puller.. Never been around the 1st gens too much always had the vp44 trucks so any help is appreciated thanks guys:rocking:
Josh

3200 gsk sprig, a fuel pin and 5x.012 or 5x.014 injectors

Sounds good will the turbo handle those or should I upgrade that as well??? The clutch will be getting a dual disk as well:tu:

They don't make a DD for those if I'm not mistaken. And if you're pulling in work stock, depending on rules it has to be a stock turbo

BIGREDGOAT 06-30-2012 10:01 AM

Southbend and valair both make DD's that will work but be warned, its not if your input will break, its when ill it. I had mine cryoed and it has held, so far....

And with 5x14's the stock turbo will get damn warm, but then again I put a he351cw on mine and I can still bury the gauge, just not near as fast.

In Indiana it just has to be a stock appearing turbo, according to the rules that I've read, I could be wrong, I know my cousin pulled work stock with an s300

go ahead and swap in a nv4500 if you can. also alot can be done with the stock charger to make it pull right with the S300's and still be WS legal

jdbigblue12v 06-30-2012 01:31 PM

do a GDS 60mm upgrade from gillette diesel just replacing the exhaust housing, different comp. wheels and bigger compressor housing

Thanks I'll look into that and see what the comparison in price would be compared to buying my cousins s300... Thanks for the info I need all the help I can get the 1st gens all new to me!!!!!:tu:

For the money spent, skip the 60mm upgrade and find an he351cw. Them are great turbos for our machines!!! And without nv4500, I personally done care for them, I say if you are going to get rid of the g360, get a g56. Hands down the fastest/smoothest shifting transmission,

I've heard that the G56's don't hold up as well as the nv5600??

cummin_un_glued 07-01-2012 01:52 PM

for serious sled pulling the nv4500 is the best and strongest. G56s break second gear and NV5600s break output shafts

BIGREDGOAT 07-01-2012 02:08 PM

Well yea, but my buddy that has a g56 in his pull truck and the only time he has broke anything was in Florida 2 years ago, he clicked off a 12.9 in a quarter right before 3rd blew, the in the DPC this year the input bearing. But his truck is over 700 up and he pulls

as your saying he's already breaking parts in the G56. i didnt say the G56 or NV5600 couldnt be used but both of them cost more then the NV4500 and in the end the NV4500 is the better sled pulling trans anyways.

is your friend John Weatherby aka smoke machine?

BIGREDGOAT 07-01-2012 03:19 PM

Oh I know, but a ve pump vs a 24 valve common rail, you cant make the power to damage it unless your gonna cheat and use drugs. And yes sir that's him.

oh i know what you mean. i just belive in building a good foundation especialy since he started this thred talking about building a dedicated puller. i figured why spend the extra 1500 on a 6 speed when he could spend it on something else ya know.

BIGREDGOAT 07-01-2012 03:38 PM

Well I didn't see it was going to be a dedicated puller, I thought it was gonna pull but still drive it lol.

it will start out being pulled and driven some but as soon as the p-pump goes on she will be a dedicated puller im hoping!!!!! thanks for all the info guys its all helping, if ya got anything else let me know... you just dont see to many 1st gens pulling in indiana so why not build one:rocking:

I pull workstock with my 93 i got a dual disk clutch from kennys pulling parts and he swears that the getrag is stronger than an nv4500. i run an s300 and ddp stg 3s with pump work and hang with the new trucks all day long i'd be more worried about your driveline breaking tore a pinion shaft out of the dana 70 so swapped in an 80 and tore the rear shaft out of the transfer case this past weekend but once all the breakages get ironed out they're darn good pullers

thanks for the info racermt, i was hoping i could be a competitve truck... some of the trucks in the work stock class here are pretty damn powerfull:rocking:

Are any of you guys worried about twisting the frame hooked to the sled?

cummin_un_glued 08-11-2012 02:00 PM

When you pull onto the track you should be prepared to break anything.

Sent with a Droid RAZR in one hand and 14,000 volts in the other.

I understand that, but I was wondering if anyone reinforced their frame to keep it from shitting itself, or if that is against the rules?

I have been drag racing since I was 18, have had plenty of breaks and disappointments along the way. Gotta pay to play! I would just rather not sacrifice my 1st gen's frame to a sled if I don't have to!

cummin_un_glued 08-11-2012 05:05 PM

you should be allowed to do any reinforcments you want just gotta be careful around the hitch better read up on your local rules as far as reinforcing the hitch
