New 89 D-250.....upgrades?

I recently puchased an 89 dodge 3/4 ton 2wd, 5spd manual and was wondering what upgrades to do to it to make it faster, i think that the injection pump was turned up some, because it smokes some, and its kinda peppy, but i want to make it faster without spending a ton of money, probably a 1,000 dollar budget, what is safe to do and still have it as a daily driver.

I know it will never be great on launches, because you cant get all of the power to the ground without burnin out....but it is what it is

I am already planning, and getting ready to order a boost and egt gauge for it

Also, it seems like the turbo output horn and intake manifold is really small, its like 1.5" or maybe 2" seems restrictive

Thanks :)

one of the first thing ya need to do is tab the kdp. your on the right track ordering gauges right away. thats one of the first things i buy when i get a new truck. next would be pump mods. look in the ve section, its full of posts bout how to turn them up. good luck and have fun :tu:

What does it mean to tab the kdp?

And thanks, I plan on it, mostly gunna just be my summer toy/daily driver, gunna weld up the spider gears in the diff too i think because right now its a 1 wheel wonder

Look at Fuel pins as well (Denny T) or possibly (M&H)... best $100 i have ever spent. :tu:

KDP= killer dowel pin

the kdp is a pin used for assymbly on the 12v and 24v trucks. in the 12v, both ve and p7100 applications it is well known of them to work there way out. if it works its way out, a couple things could happen, one, it could fall all the way to the pan and not hurt anything. this is the least common. two, it gets caught between the cam gear and the timing case and cracks the timing case resulting in the whole front of the mootor being dissassymbled

to fix the problem, u have to pull the timing cover off the front of the motor. all in all it should take roughly 3 hours the first time you do one. its not bad. here is a thread that tells more bout it

3200 Spring

Used Turbo (Compressor upgrade otherwise)
Convertor (Hughes Is good and affordable)

yep. And improves day to day drivability 100%

chiefton17 04-16-2011 01:06 PM

Thanks for all of the advice :)
I'm gunna do that kdp asap!
What should I take the turbo off of if I do use a used turbo?, if I get a new one, where should I get it from? Any recommendations?
I read that since my truck is non intercooled, it has bigger injectors? So injectors could wait a little while righ?
How does a gov spring improve drivability?

Thanks for all of the help :)

Your injectors are good for 375ish HP with a perfect tune If they are in top shape, remember these trucks are over 20 years old now.

A gov. spring makes them new trucks to drive. That would be first on my list of things after gauges and stuff.

most deff if you just want an extra 150 or so horsepower i would do pump mods fuel pin and gov spring butt GAUGES FIRST!!!! and then a good torque converter or clutch and alot of extra air butt every one is different build you a truck you want my buddy drives a ppumped no i/c first gen he uses a hi tech turbo it spools good and he can turn 50 psi butt the truck is no where close to stock if your not wanting a 400 or 500 horsepoer truck an hx35 should be good i run one on my truck and i like it butt that is just my opinion and everyone has a different one good luck:tu:

once again, thanks ya'll, what i have done so far since these tips has been to install the gauges, i turned the afc screw up a few turns, i turned the factory fuel pin about 120* clockwise from stock, and tomarrow i will be turning up the full fuel screw. I also turned the star wheel 3/4 of a turn clockwise, but didnt notice much from that, from what ive read the adjusting the starwheel doesnt really change power? just makes the turbo spool faster :) why does turning it change how fast the turbo spools, and did i turn everything the right way?

I still have to do the kdp, but i need the truck this weekend, so that will have to wait a couple days, next week it will get done for sure :/

Ive also read that adjusting the valve lash makes a major differce? how long does it take and how hard is it to do?

Ive heard about changing the timing? how would i do that?

Thanks for all of the help you guys

Also on order next week is the "366" spring and the Denny T stage 2 fuel pin :)

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Ive also heard that my getrag will have many problems :/ any tips on that? and how long will the stock clutch hold up with these mods?

there is a nifty video on youtube about the timing on first gens watch it it is easy to do you need a wood block a ratchet stop and a wrench and you are good to go
