12v 91 1st gen. performance

Hey i have been working on trucks ever sence my dad handed me tools and told me to fix it my self"heres the tools ul need git after it" now that i got that down and my new 91 12v cummins 1st generation i wanna learn what i should start with first performence wise? I wanted to add as much power as a stock clutch could hadle just fine then up grade to a 350h 800 tq clutch then go from there! is that whats best or where sould i start? i played with my ve fuel pump today but im not really all to sure what i can do with it and whats to much for a stock truck and that pump? i got it to throw a lil more smoke today i was pretty pumped to push the gas siting there and see a better cloud come out! made my day what should i do now...
thanks for all the help

Gauges first. Get a pyro. There are a lot of articles if you search around. Look deep into your wallet and see how fast you want to go.

Dylan12v91cummins 06-02-2010 10:20 AM

im not to worryied about speed.... my maine goal is to be able to hook up to anything and pull it all day! i work and live in cattle country so i pull a 28 foot trailer alot that we have full of cattle. for right now i dont plan on more than 350h and around 800tq. then later on add on. but thanks i will git set up with gauges

tltruckparts 06-02-2010 11:01 AM

if you use it to work all day in, id leave it stock. ever since i messed with mine for the first time now im messing with it constantly. not to mention if you haul cattle, i know for a fact they dont like black smoke in their faces:tu:

Dylan12v91cummins 06-02-2010 11:10 AM

its still up in the air but then again i still have another truck i can use to pull haha. maybe it wont roll it out all that much, no take that back if ima play with it i wont alot of it!:tu: we will see im geting my pay check this friday. i just wanna have it all planed out just in case this is what i wanna do.........thinkking it is and i wanna do it right the first time!

tltruckparts 06-02-2010 11:29 AM

smoke is cool and all for a couple days but trust me it gets real old real fast. all it is wasted fuel and destroys your fuel economy. and it also gets expensive fast you do one or two upgrades, then something else either breaks or doesnt work right. and next thing you know, your repairing something else every weekend

aarons91cummins 06-02-2010 12:41 PM

Yeah he is not lying I have a 91.5 12v about a month ago I maxed out the fuel pump. Since then I have had to replace the lift pump. And my injectors. And they only had 130,000 miles on them. Is your truck intercooled? If it is a here are some good little upgrades for you. First would be some Dynomite Diesel 80 horsepower injectors for only about 700 bucks. Then Dynomite Diesel Power Pin which will give you 25-40 more horsepower for right around 200 bucks.

Dylan12v91cummins 06-02-2010 02:39 PM

yeah i have the same truck as you aaron. 91 but not sure if its 91 or later that year a 91.5 how can i figure that out? and yeah i have looked into the old smokey power pin and injectors but i was thinking 40 because i didnt want to mess any thing else that is stick up i figured do it right the first time so i didnt have any major problems. plus i also looked at that 3200 rpm spring. so i should go 80horse if im intercooled

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

all i have done with the pump is turn the smoke screw a bit more more fuel bout 2.5 turns. waiting for my bad to help with turning up the rest and more upgraded parts

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

yes intercooled

smokin_93_cummins 06-02-2010 09:40 PM

I would go with an M&h fuel pin that way you can get one thats better made for pulling. And since you are pullin I would look into upgradin that turbo before you get too fuel happy. I have a 93 cummins thats got the stock turbo it spools like a turd. The quicker you can spool the better you will take off with a load.

Dylan12v91cummins 06-02-2010 10:40 PM

hmm aright never heard of that brand tell just now and im looking at them now...m1-m5 and what type of turbos do you suggest?

tltruckparts 06-02-2010 11:00 PM

theyres a bunch of good turbos out there. all depends on how much cash you wanna drop

Dylan12v91cummins 06-02-2010 11:09 PM

i was thinking a good bit of money on them and go twins

tltruckparts 06-02-2010 11:43 PM

i dont knoq if your really aware of how much twins really cost. figure at least 4 grand for piping and turbos. then you need gauges, head studs, orings, new headgaskets, etc etc it ends up getting quite expensive quite fast. and if your looking for that much power you might just want to get a p pump truck. and in 90% of situations twins arent needed

Dylan12v91cummins 06-03-2010 12:08 AM

well there yeah go changed my mind real fast haha yeah i did kno it was that much like i said im new to all this performance stuff. il go with one!!! im gessen il have well over a 1,000 set aside for my turbo tho and what is needed with it

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

and na dont want another truck i love mine and i dont really want that much power or will need it! ima stop around 325-350h and around 800tq...

hes right stock is the way to go unless your really good then you can make some bad ass power and no smoke with awesome mileage. unless you really work with the mods on these trucks and build it for towing they suck at towing

Dylan12v91cummins 06-03-2010 01:02 AM

well looks like im it it for the long hall...il do what it takes one step at a time just need some help with what direction to start! maybe a parts list would really help so i can see what figure im looken at price wise then i can make it happen ima have this truck for the rest of my life so its time to make it "My truck" thanks for the help guys ima need alot more tho haha... parts list would really help out:s:

big bad diesel 416 06-03-2010 01:08 AM

well first

GAUGES

then all the fun stuff!!

what do you want to do?
just be fast?
drag?
tow?
sled pull?

Dylan12v91cummins 06-03-2010 01:26 AM

haha yeah i got some today but i still need a cuple more i got turbo bust and tran.temp.

i would say tow

big bad diesel 416 06-03-2010 11:31 AM

so then your going to want to build lots of torque and not to much HP
get a deep trany and diff pan
clutch
overfill getrag (if your a 5 speed)
have pump turned up internally dont mess with ANY stock external settings FP screw, Afc, Ect...
get a 4in intake and if your non I/C get one stock ones work great
60mm turbo upgrade
4in turbo back exhaust
4.10 gears w/posi in the diff or 3.75 if your 4x4
twin electric fans on adj. thermostats
BHAF

thats a good start

Dylan12v91cummins 06-03-2010 05:34 PM

alright thanks i am intercooled and 5 speed:tu:

tltruckparts 06-03-2010 06:06 PM

if you plan on droppin the money on turbo get a good turbo over the 60mm h1c. somethin like a phat shaft or super b or something along those lines

smokin_93_cummins 06-03-2010 08:53 PM

Since you have a manual you really dont need a trans temp gauge unless you just like lookin at a bunch of guages and for the turbo you would be best off with a good single than an outrageously priced set of twins even though they are cool lookin:rocking:

Dylan12v91cummins 06-04-2010 04:03 PM

alright thanks guys! il look in to all the parts this weekend after my fishen tournament

Our site sponsors carry injectors and fuel pins for about half that.
