which turbos to use?

well guys i need some ideas for which turbos to use for my twin setup im getting ready to start. im pretty sure im going to do an hx35 and ht3b combo. which size exhaust housings, compressor wheels etc should i use that would work well for my setup. it is going to be a daily driver with a decent amount of trailer time behind it.

i was thinking about a 9cm or 12cm housing on the hx35. is that too small or should i run a 14cm? and should it be w/g or non w/g.

and im pretty sure a 26cm housing on the ht3b will be correct?

welderboy250 03-04-2010 11:10 PM

in my opinion a 9 is to small for any turbo on any engine as large as 5.9 litres let alone a performance one. a 12 or 14 should work well and it will prob have to be waste gated in order to keep from over boosting severely.

im not sure about the housing size for the large turbo

tltruckparts 03-04-2010 11:22 PM

what if i were to run a non wastegated housing and just use a blow off valve so it doesnt over boost? does that work or is that not the right way to go about it?

id love to run my hx40 instead of an hx35 but i just dont like how laggy it is down low already so i want a housing much lower than the 18cm i got now

welderboy250 03-05-2010 06:17 AM

maby someone else will correct me if im wrong but i think u could over speed the turbo like that. plus i dont know of a bov that will regulate very well. the way they normally get hooked up it just dumps everything at once. maby u could rig up an air pressure regulator like u use on an air compressor to fine tune the thing but i still dont think its the way to go. if u dont have a waste gated housing u could use an external gate.they are already made to be adjustable and fine tunable.

ill just get one with a wastegate thats no big deal. anyone got any advice for what size turbos to get?

- You'll want a 14cm waste-gated exhaust housing for the HX35. Set the waste-gate so it just begins to open at 26psig.
- You'd come out ahead if you upgraded the compressor of the HX35 (turn it into a hybrid).
- The 26cm exhaust housing for the HT3B will be a little laggy. A 21cm would be best..

What's wrong with that HX40 in your Sig?

Are you gonna stick with those 5x.014"s? It's been my experience that the HX35Hybrd/HT3B combo will just support those injectors with a maxed IP, a good IC, free flowing intake & exhaust, etc. (Support meaning the EGTs don't go above 1300*F or so at WOT).

Where are you drawing The Line? :pca1:

is there a way to set them individually? like seperate boost gauges? or how do you know when it is set to open at 26psi?

do you mean like putting an hx40 compressor wheel in it?

would the ht3b housing need a wastegate too?

nothing is wrong with it at all. i just dont like the lag down low i want a lot of boost down low and up high and i want the efficiency of the compounds. especially with towing i need it down low

i can do whatever i want with injectors. i will use the 5x.014s for now, but in the VERY near future, it will be seeing a p pump swap so i will probably go to some 6x.016's by then. or whatever size i need to work correctly. what size would you recommend?

im going for 5-600 horse. i want the thing to haul whatever i put behind it, and smoke these damn powerstroke guys around me who think theyre fords are the fastest things ever

i put all my responses in red. thanks for the help BC youve been great!

i think 6x0.016s are big for a p-pumped engine, we need them cause our trucks don't flow a lot of fuel. i also think you may be happy with a HX35 HX40 hybrid. from what i understand you basically take the front half of the HX40 and bolt it on the HX35, ( something like that may be a little more indepth)

Shorten/extend the waste-gate actuator's connecting rod. Adjust its length such that when you apply a regulated 26psig of compressed air, the linkage just begins to move.

Basically, yes. There are kits available so you can do the upgrade yourself. I don't know that it's as simple as swapping parts with an HX40.

No.

While it may present with a little bit more lag than the 35, you'll definitely need the additional airflow capability seeing as you plan on going to more fuel. I can tell you from first-hand experience that an HX35Hybrid/HT3B combo will not support 6x.016" fed by a 12mm VE. Over 1400*F EGTs with a sustained WOT run.

With those goals in mind, you may very well come out ahead money-wise if you go ahead and step-up to an S300 over the HT3B. Perhaps a Super S300 if not a custom 62/65/14. That way you'll have plenty of air to keep things cool when working the truck and won't have to spend turbo money twice when you go to the P-pump. ;)

tltruckparts 03-08-2010 09:22 PM

so if i ran an s300 and ht3b combo, would i then be in good shape with some 6x016's or is that still too much fuel with a p pump. or will a p pump hit my power levels im going for with 5x0.014's?

or actually instead of asking all these questions why dont i just make it easier?

what size injectors for a p pump and what turbos will do me right around 600 hp would you recommend? instead of me trying to figure out what injectors based on turbos etc etc etc

and also if 600 hp isnt attainable without porting/polishing head work etc etc etc id be happy with 500. i want keep it mostly stock internals for simplicity and daily reliability. so if 500 is a much more attainable mark thats ok too. but if i can get 600 with the injectors pump and twins thatd be nice too.

does anyone around here have a setup anywhere near what im looking at? if so, whats your mpg look like?

anyone?
