run away question

why cant you just flip the manual shut off when you have a run away. i made my truck run away to see if it would work and it killed it right away. of course my buddy had my psychology book ready to choke it out if it didnt.

It'll work, but unreliably. Generaly if the engine is running under 3800 rpms it may work, because it does the same thing the governor does. It's not a recomended to rely on that, ALWAYS be ready to cut off the air supply. Ive also heard of a guy using a phone book to choke the air off and pages got sucked into the turbo. So, yes it may work, but if you're engine is really running away, it might not. Cutting off the air is the only sure way to kill the engine.

a big coat works well on the intake too.........dont get yer hand by the thing it will pull it off

best shut down device i ever seen or heard about is the Halon fire extinguisher, a quick shot out of one of these into the turbo and that thing quits instantly!

theyre not good for the environtment or some crap like that, and if you get any in your mouth it'll drown ya, so theyre getting kind of hard to come by depending on where you are, i know here in BC they've essentially outlawed them in any industrial/workplace setting, and no one will service them, but they can still be found, the fire extinguisher guys(sales/service) always seem to have a couple around, just gotta ask

(and its freakin hilarious if youve got one handy for the first fire up of a fresh rebuild, you hafta see the look on a guys face 5 seconds after it flashes up, hes chewing his fingernails off watching guages like a hawk and that brand new engine goes SQUEAK! and quits!!)

For a true runaway the manual shut off will not work. The only way to stop a true runaway is to cut the air supply.

x2 thats how we do it at work if we encounter a runaway, two pieces of 1/2" thick x12"x12" plywood(we work on industrial diesels, most have a turbo on both banks of the engine)

i've heard of it... my dad talks about it with dozers when they rip thru a gas line... only thing you can pretty much do is just go for one hell of a ride. mechanical engines are nice but electronics also make run aways much harder to come by.

and even then i saw a rig with a shitty Intercooler patch that failed while running away and they covered the turbo and nothing needless to say it is best to take loose the intake horn and covet there with a 2x6 with a little mudflap glued to it and if your working on a 2 stroke Detroit and is runnin away backwards remember to cover the exaust NOT THE INTAKE

runaway backwards?like exhaust out the intake?
