New Cummins Owner

New Cummins owner here, quick question.
I have a 2004 1/2 Cummins, only 52k miles. Truck has no muffler and the K&N filter.
Truck seems not to make much power and poor fuel mileage averaging 13 mpg mixing city and hwy, I owned a 2005 Ford 6.0 before this. The Ford was good on power but I had head gasket and turbo problems. I had the Dodge at a shop that checked "injection pressure, rail pressure and fuel pump pressure". All were meeting factory spec except for the fuel pump, down 3 lbs. Recommended I get an aftermarket lift pump. I have heard yes on aftermarket and it really doesn't matter.

The truck is used for hauling a 28 ft car trailer with 3200lb car, golf cart and tools as wells as a 29 ft travel trailer. Just need the truck to work well, not be a hot rod.

Ideas???

Thanks
John

First off welcome to the forum.
Yes the 04.5 Cr's had a lift pump on the back on the fuel filter bowl that would fail. Dodges fix was know as the retro-fit kit that relocated it to the tank. Personaly with how crapy our fuel is in this country I'd put an Airdog or Fass fuel system with filters. Much better pump than the dodge retro fit and better filtration than the factory filter.

Get rid of the K&N filter and either put an AFE or S&B with a dry filter.

How does the truck start? Pop right off or crank awhile? I don't care what idle pressure is at the high side but what is cranking pressure? These truck have an issue with sticking injectors.

Thanks for the feedback
Truck starts excellent.
Do I replace the filter element only (K&N)

As far as the lift pump. Do you have any part numbers for the aftermarket pumps.

Good info thank you
John
