Need help selecting a turbo(s)

Hey guys im new to the site as ive been doing some research on a turbo setup.
Little about my truck...

its a 2005 Ford F-350, after a few sets of head gaskets and finally warping a block on the stock powerstroke I decided to do a cummins conversion as I love the truck but not the motor....

Ive not got a 2004.5 cummins 24v in place with the 5speed ford tranny and 4:10 gears.
Im running 37" Toyo MTs on 22" Rig wheels.

for help in clearance ive got a factory 2002 manifold and currently a stock holset 1 hx35 (smaller impeller) and im maxing out at about 26-27lbs of boost but my EGTs are getting quite high, and to be honest I dont feel comfortable throwing the boat or a trailer on the back...

Ive got a 5" Bullydog exhaust and a K+N Style cold air. Im also running a juice with attitude..

now where im at is trying to decide to go to a twin setup to really drop EGTs and run some decent numbers or just a single bit bigger maybe even a holset 3 hx35 or something a bit bigger.

I would love to hear your suggestions... ideally I want to keep My egts down below 1100 while towing. Id love to have the power but really the towing is what im using the rig for... I realize I could go to some smaller tires but I love the look...

The twins im contemplating buying are a Super B Turbo and an r700..

Id appreciate any help or suggestions you guys have.

I also have a Fass...

injectors are stock, but I do have a set of 80hp BD tips I could throw on... if I did that id want to put some ARP headstuds on just to be safe...

he351 over a ht3b is a good set of towing twins, if you can do all the piping and lines yourself you could get away with twins for less than what you could get a big single for.
talk to Brice at BBD im sure he could get the 3b for a pretty reasonable price

btw welcome to db:hellox:

thx for the welcome!
With those twins and the 37s what kind of boost & EGT #s would I see in your opinion?
I realize theres a bunch of variables but we're pretty much at sea level in Vancouver and its generally colder.. lol but realistically im lookin to keep EGTs as LOW as possible :)

dontneedtostroke 10-25-2010 12:14 AM

well im running 35" nitto mud grapplers, and pulling a 14' enclosed trailer with a kitchens worth of cabinets in it, the highest i see is probably 900* i believe

IROCNParts 10-25-2010 12:16 AM

those are some LOUD tires ;)
and those are some LOW egts very nice
what about boost #s ? 35-40?

dontneedtostroke 10-25-2010 12:22 AM

yeah they are!! but they have real good tread life for a mud tire imo. as for boost numbers, it really depends on how heavy your foot is, ive seen well into the 70's but under "normal" driving and towing you shouldnt see over 45-50 max

IROCNParts 10-25-2010 12:24 AM

ahh sorry didnt realize you had a cp3 and 150s, makes a lot more sense that way
you think I could run those twins with stock fuel setup other than the fass? would I be running max pressure on the rails or underfueling the turbos?

dontneedtostroke 10-25-2010 12:35 AM

actually i was running this setup before pump and sticks, so i think you would be fine cause all that was done to mine was the smarty at the time of install. the He351 is the stocker on mine so its got a pretty quick spool to begin with.

im not much of a turbo guru so maybe someone else will chime in here and give you some more informed answers cause turbos make my head go:s:

IROCNParts 10-25-2010 12:37 AM

haha thats what Ive been doing all weekend

just trying to find out info on stock turbos has been a PIA
so in 06 the stock turbo was the HE351 and in 05 it was an hx35?

:argh:

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

thx for all the info & help :)

dontneedtostroke 10-25-2010 12:54 AM

that i dont know, i thought the hx35 was a 2nd gen turbo and the he341 was before the 351, but for all i know its the same turbo lol.

you could also run the hx35 with the 3b as for dropping egts i have no info on that.. you could also run an s400 under either one, which will make piping alot easier since its a clockwise turbo rather than counter like the 3b.

bobcat67 10-25-2010 01:20 AM

yeah the stock turbo in 03-04 was the he341 and from then on to 07.5 it was the he351, i bet with just an he351 your exhaust temp drops a bit though, specs on an he351 is around a 60/60/9 whereas an hx35 is like a 57/60/9 i think a nice he351 and s400 setup would be awesome, I don't like to do this but ats makes a kit that would work very well for towing it's a stock he351 over an Aurora 4000 so both turbos are a good single turbo, but with the stocker over the 4000 it'll spool really fast, literally instantly and you can run it on a stock fuel system and be just fine with it

dontneedtostroke 10-25-2010 01:27 AM

how much does that kit run? your lookin at 1200 bucks maximum if you do the piping yourself and run the hx... prolly around 1500 with the 351. i dont know if money is a factor or not, just something to compare

IROCNParts 10-25-2010 01:34 AM

I actually think im gonna grab a used he351 for now, throw it on and see what happens.
And then if Im still not happy get a second one.. seems theres a lot to choose from. Ill keep you guys posted...
thx a LOT for the help :)

finally is there any differences in the he351s from the diff years? Im aware the electronic wastegate controller will either need to be plugged or tie the wires out of the way..

dontneedtostroke 10-25-2010 01:46 AM

only difference in 351's i think is theres the he351 and then theres the he351ve off the newer trucks which is the variable vein ones i believe and you would need the controller from fleece to run it.

jramon85 10-25-2010 05:29 PM

I'm pretty happy with my phat shaft 62/80. Spools quick, plenty of boost and my egt's have never seen more than 1350 pulling a 32 ft gooseneck at full throttle. Just my 2¢.... :tttt:
