phat shaft 62 vs factory turbo = big difference in mpg?

recently had a new long block and injectors installed.

using the trucks computer to measure MPG:
current: 17
prior to new setup: 23

only difference is, i'm now running the factory turbo and i was running a phat shaft 62 before.

can a turbo make that much of a difference?

biged681985 07-06-2010 09:16 AM

u were getting 23 before the new long block? and 17 after the long block and turbo? if so, how many miles is on the long block? have u checked ur fuel to ensure the injectors arent leaking?

id hand calculate ur milage, with performance upgrades, the lie-o-meters get farther and farther off.

23 with messed up motor and phat shaft 62.
17 with new long block, new injectors, and factory turbo.

less than 1,000 miles on new block and injectors.

this weekend i installed a new intake horn, cai, and changed the oil. didn't notice anything leaking around the motor and the oil looked normal.

biged681985 07-06-2010 09:44 AM

my guess is the motor just isnt broke in yet. give it a couple thousand, hand calculate ur milage and see how it comes out :tu: and yes a turbo that size wil help milage some also.

ehaze 07-06-2010 09:47 AM

cool, i'll top it off today and see how it goes.

looking forward to getting that phat shaft back in the truck!

NadirPoint 07-06-2010 10:29 AM

I wouldn't consider it "broke in" until after it passes at least 30k.

ehaze 07-06-2010 11:39 AM

how long would you wait to put the phat shaft 62 on?

NadirPoint 07-06-2010 11:52 AM

I don't think the turbo has anything to do with break-in. As long as you have the fuel to spool it, I'd put it on and drive it balls out with a 5ton trailer behind it for a few months. That should help it get started to break in.

biged681985 07-06-2010 11:58 AM

u can throw the turbo back on any time ya want. once ya got around a 1000 miles on it, id change the oil for the first time, and put fresh oil and filter on it. then go to the 5k interval. but thats just me.

kazairl 07-06-2010 02:52 PM

^ I would do it at 500 miles personally but you want to change it somewhere in that area for sure.

ehaze 07-06-2010 03:30 PM

i changed the oil ~500 miles after the new block was installed.

might wait for a new exhaust manifold before i put the 62 back on.

motorboat 07-06-2010 04:28 PM

ehaze, or, you could sell it to me :humm:

open to offers.

sorta sad that i have a nice turbo and a new set of injectors with 90hp nozzles just sitting in the garage.

:pca1:

the phat shaft 62 with a smarty s06 on level two should be a safe setup?

dangerous1965 07-06-2010 10:26 PM

OK let's start bidding on that turbo:jump: Do i hear 750.!!!:pca1:

ehaze 07-07-2010 06:17 AM

once i decide what direction i'm going, i'll either install the stuff or put it up for sale.

:c:

X2.....

kazairl 07-09-2010 05:52 PM

Question, Is the increase in performance a phat shaft 62 gives, worth the cost over a stock turbo? I understand the larger housing and the LDP 71mm wheel will flow more, but the compressor is only 2mm bigger. Not much of an increase.

Not that I'm saying that a s300 isn't better than an he351, I'm just curious why you went with a 62 as opposed to a 64 or 66.

bobcat67 07-09-2010 06:00 PM

well i'm not him but i went with a HTB2 62/65/12 because i live at over 5000k feet in elevation, it's a little bit bigger than stock and the boost psi really isn't much more than stock either, but i can run at a higher egt safer, and it spools faster than stock and the amount of volume it flows over stock is way higher, PSI doesn't equal volume, sure i'd hit 45 on the stock he351, but at that level of boost it was just pushing hot air with the HTB2 i'll run that boost and not be pushing hot air, and it'll make a great top turbo in a compound setup at this elevation

dangerous1965 07-09-2010 08:58 PM

Ok waiting:w2: still waiting:pca1: How about now?:c:

kazairl 07-10-2010 12:38 AM

Doh! just realized he has a phat shaft and not a super phat shaft :argh:

but at that level of boost it was just pushing hot air with the HTB2 i'll run that boost and not be pushing hot air, and it'll make a great top turbo in a compound setup at this elevation
Trust me, An HTB2 at that boost pressure is pushing a lot of hot air too.

the 62 was on the truck when i purchased it.

wouldn't mind moving to a 64.

how would i know if it's a super phat?

dangerous1965 07-10-2010 06:17 PM

OK I'm down to 500. now! Still waiting!:jump:

kazairl 07-10-2010 11:25 PM

A super phat shaft has a 71 mm turbine wheel. A phat shaft has a 65 mm turbine whee(same as an HTB2) Short of taking the exhaust housing off and measuring the wheel I don't know if there is an easy way to tell. Unless II stamps it on the housing or in the model number somewhere.

ehaze 07-16-2010 08:06 AM

after two tanks and hand calculating the mpg, I'm sitting at 15mpg.

90% of my driving is on the HW and i average around 70mph (smarty on level 1).

is 15mpg bad?

:ouch:

bobcat67 07-16-2010 11:50 AM

yeah 15mpg is terrible unless you have 44" tires

03dieseldaddy 07-16-2010 11:50 AM

break them in like ur gonna use it if u pull alot pull with it now thats what i alwas say

ehaze 07-18-2010 02:25 PM

http://www.1am2.com/files/1/Dodge200...%2062%2080.JPG

guess i was wrong, it appears to be a super phat 62/80.

(turbo looks wet because i just finished cleaning it)

guess i wont be buying another turbo.

:choochoo:

You probably need for fuel for that turbo.

Luke

ehaze 07-18-2010 03:50 PM

plan:
turbo
90hp injectors
~80% cp3
studs

:tu:

kazairl 07-18-2010 06:20 PM

huh 15 is all I get with my 2nd gen on 35s.

dangerous1965 07-18-2010 11:22 PM

Try your smarty on 5 and at POD 75 see how that works out! Seems #5 is the best for MPG! And your foot!
