3rd injection event removal?
 

anyone know if someone's come out with a way to remove the 3rd injection event on the 04.5+ 5.9's yet? somewhat cheap?

what does this accomplish and what are the benefits? I've never even hear of this mod.

i dont really see where the gains would be; unless of course the mod also alters injector phase... if you remove one of the injection sequences your actually going to lose performance... initial injection is just to get the combustion process moving and reduce diesel knock from detonation; the other sequential injections are to fuel it. you remove one; and your only left with one phase to deliver all the fuel that you need to make any kind of power; this would only be benneficial if this also alters the one injection that is going to count to be open as long as possible to deliver that much more fuel. so; i too am currious as to why this would be a good upgrade? not saying its wrong... it just doesnt add up unless some other variables are changed.

I was always told that the third 'event' was just to heat the cat. If this is true I would think all it is doing is sending heat down the exhaust. Supposedly it is late in the cycle so there is no usable power seen from it. (I can assure you, there is no way enough 'heat' can be sent down my exhaust to even warm my cat!! . . . LOL ) Like I said, if this is true then it should seem removing that 'event' would increase mileage!! I'm all for that! I would even have the 24V sound if that would increase the mileage even further! I'm pretty sure I read some Cummins documentation that stated the first two injection 'events' spread out the combustion spike and that is how they quieted these engines down over the 24V.
(I also remember reading that the new 6.7L was to use 5 to 7 'events' per cycle. Did that ever happen or are we still waiting on that technology?)

To answer: I don't know of anyone who has done this. I would think someone would be working on it... But, I don't know. If I had the resources I would be!!

So are you saying one could make a CR sound like a VP44 truck if you take out that 3rd injection? I don't have anywhere near the knowledge to know if it's that's what it would do or not. Hopefully someone who know a lot more than me will chime in and give some input.

Millco's got it, and yes, I'm pretty sure it just supports pollution control (cat and in-chamber EGR nonsense). I suspect removing the 3rd injection would probably not make any difference at all in how the truck sounded or ran. But then again if that was so, why haven't the programmers jumped on it? I'm not aware of aything out there claiming this feature yet. Maybe they are already doing it and not telling how (trade secrets and all) and that is where the mileage increase comes from.

the reason I asked this, was from my understanding the 3rd event is all for emmisions and it is what causes so much soot in our oil, and it also causes a little bit of a milage drop.
My reason's for removing it would not be for a hp gain but for cleaner oil and maybe a milage improvement.
I don't know if it would make the actual engine sound louder(like a gen2 24V) To make the exhaust sound like a gen2 24v you need to put a 2nd gen 24v exhaust manifold on it.

Seriously? That's all you have to do to make it sound like a 2nd Gen is switch the exhaust manifold? Some of ya'll might laugh or whatever but that's what's been keepin me from getting a CR. I just love the way my '01 sound and most of the common rails are REALLY loud but you just can't really hear the turbo in the exhaust and what not.

Yes, the 3rd and subsequent events are nothing but a waste of fuel and only quiet the truck down. I know a guy in Oregon, if he still does it, that will do your computer for a price. It isn't cheap and he does not guarantee it. It also reduces heat making internals last longer and can if I remember right, increase the compression ratio, although I'm not 100% on that.

Your mileage goes up about 5 to 15% depending on driving style, mods and that sort of thing.
