Twins and engine durability
Now that I have twins I have more questions then ever :humm:
How high of boost can the engine take before effecting head gasket life. I have pulled a lot of miles when I had the stock turbo and held 40 PSI for several minutes at a time just made sure the EGT's never went above 1350. Right now with my Smarty on 3 and the TST on 1/1 max boost tops at 45 PSI I am thinking I can safely tow on this setting. (EGT's are 1000 or less) Today I tryied Smarty on 3 and TST 2/2 I hit 55psi in a few seconds I backed off right away. But dam it was quick. I can only imagine Smarty on 7 and TST on 4/4 :choochoo: Should I just set the wastgate at 45 and call it good. Or is that to high? I guess I am more consirned about reliability right now then loosing a few HP. I do plan on putting studs on in the near future. Is it true you shouldn't go over 60psi with stock valve springs? With Studs what can I set my wastegate to while using the truck at a tow Rig? |
I have factory gasket and arp studs and run 65+ daily for over a year and only problem ive had is blowing exhaust wheels off big turbo! And on the valve spring thing i def.would get them if u r going over 60lbs i can float valves @wot , have a set of hamilton springs just need time to install

I wouldn't push stock bolts past 45PSI to be safe.

I would get the studs soon as your pushing the limit of what your stock bolts will hold. But having pushed that much through already I would look at taking the head off surfacing it and making sure the gasket isn't already on the way out. in my 01 I never pushed over 37lbs of boost and mine was blown between every cylinder. Now it's studded and o-ringed so I shouldn't have to worry about that anymore. I know it's going to cost more and take more time but with that setup and towing it's better to be safe then to have a mess on a trip.

Be safe and get studs and springs/.........but i know several guys who run 50-55PSI all day on stock bolts and springs. (including me) But i plan on adding studs asap ($)

I set the wastgate at 45. I am going to wait until next winter and do a cam, springs, and head gasket. This way I figure it will be done right.
I do plan on getting a new truck in 2010 but I will be keeping the 06 forever. |
