Good single turbo upgrade for towing?
I have a 2006 5.9 with a G56 manual. The truck is in the shop getting head work, head studs and new injectors. It looks like I will have about $1500 left over to play with. Looking for a single turbo good for a daily driver and towing a 35ft 5th wheel? I need a turbo that won't surge with a manual.

oods are that the OP will be satisfied with custom tuning from a reputable tuner (if he doesn't have it already) and won't need to upgrade the turbo or other parts. Lots of people don't realize that you can get a better/cleaner running truck and more power getting custom tuning vs just throwing on a bigger turbo, injectors, cam, etc.

There is no way I can put in a cam and turbo for under $1500. My wife will kill me if I spend any more than the money I have set aside for this work. Already put a solid flywheel and 600hp clutch and I'm running a edge CS. ALL I'M LOOKING FOR IS A TURBO UNDER $1500 THAT WON'T SURGE WHEN SHIFTING WHILE TOWING AND WILL WORK ON A DAILY DRIVER. My stock turbo has 200k on it. It has a little shaft play. My fueling outruns my turbo on any setting over 2 and my egts easily hit 1300÷. This isn't my first Cummins, just haven't kept up with what is on the market and I'm on a limited budget.

1300* is not hot, you can run all day and it's actually good for the engine to do that. It cleans out carbon build up in the cylinders. Your tuner is what's making your EGTs that temp, edge runs hot, they are not that great of a tuner. Your turbo should have some radial play, the oil pressure tightens that up. You don't want axial play in the turbo. What injectors and or CP3 does your truck have?

1300 is where I have my edge defuelling. If not the sky is the limit. I try to keep it under 1100 for the most part. The play is past where it should be and is at the point where it is going to start leaking oil soon. The injectors are being upgraded to 50hp. Current fuel pump is stock with no signs of quitting soon. I just don't have the experience with matching a turbo to a manual. My last Cummins was an auto.
