Edge comp issues

So, I'm new to the site, new to owning a diesel, and confused as hell.

I have a 1998 24v 3500 with no upgrades, other than a edge comp box. Been working on fixing it. Bought it for 3800 with 240,000 miles on it, and it was pretty tore up. Got all the problems fixed, things that bother me at least.

I called edge, they told me I had it hooked to the wrong wire, which I don't see as plausible but I guess is plausible. I have the edge comp box, part number 30300, and it works for the most part. Plugged it in, wired it up, tapped the wires, and voila. Instant difference. BUT, no black smoke, no difference between the settings. Setting 1 - 5, all the same result. Best I can figure from what has been expressed to me, is I am not tapped into the VP44 injection pump correctly. I even took the turbo out of play, and still with on setting 5, no black smoke whatsoever. Edge technical support told me, as in there manual, that it is the topmost wire, closest to the block. Well, the topmost wire, is not the closest to the block. The wire closest to the block, is not the topmost wire. But hooking up to either one, has the same effect, except for the fact that any wire hooked up except the topmost wire, throws a ETC and check engine light is on. Now, my next step after this is to eliminate the problem completely and install a stealth plate. But I'm on a budget, and just want it to work.

Any suggestions? Any feedback is appreciated.

Could be a fuel problem, such as a bad VP, but more likely a bad lift pump, and its just not getting enough fuel.

Yep fuel pump issue is my guess.. your starving your injection pump (VP44) i think you have the wire tapped right just running out of fuel to supply your pump. If i remember right Edge told me that the first 2 settings on the Comp adjust the fuel injection timing, no more fuel added just timing, settings 3-5 add more fuel. With 230k miles on the odometer, id seriously think of upgrading the lift pump, because if you starve the Injection pump your looking at a 1000-2500 $ fix....

But the fuel pump is brand new. I replaced it about a month ago, not rebuilt, but brand new. It puts out a constant 15 psi at idle and never drops below 12.5 psi. (Fuel pressure gauge is hooked into the fuel filter housing)

did you just replace the lift pump or lift and vp44? had same problemn with comp box on my 99.. ended up being the box itself. make sure its for a 98.5-00model yr... 01-03 are a different box because of the cam/crank sensor fiddling that cummins did. also check the wire tap and make sure both pins are engaged onto wire. or just spend the extra $ and get an adrenaline.....
