Torque Converter Lockup
Ok, got a quick question. Whats a lockup do,and what are the advantages and disadvantages.
|
Are you asking about a lock-up switch?
|
its almost like having a manual trans. when the switch is flicked it locks up the converter so theres no slip in the drivetrain.
|
Advantages include better engine braking by keeping the RPM's higher while slowing down. I like to keep mine on while pulling a trailer to reduce transmission temperatures. If your around town, the T/C may lock and unlock a lot while driving around, locking it makes for a smoother ride.
Just don't forget about it while getting to slow speeds. It will stall the engine. |
So does it basically hold it in the certain gear you want?
|
You can lock it in 3rd of 4th with stock electronics and stock valve body. It will stay locked in 3rd if you have O/D off, and the lock up switch engaged. It will not down shift. With the O/D off button not turned on, it can shift up into O/D. It will not shift out of this gear as long as the switch is on. You can physically downshift to 2nd to make it go into 2nd with the lock up switch on. Same for 1st.

With a stock valve body, and stock electronics? I have a stock VB, and just the switch. I can't lock up in second.

---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Not sure if the tranny is stock. Don't know much on the previous history because I bought it at a local auction but yeah it does lock up in 2nd so what would cause that to happen? Valve body or electronics? |
