BD Super B Special- Wastegate interference
 

just installed my BD pulse manifold, and my super be special. I have not ran the truck down the road yet, as I am building my exhaust. BUT, I noticed the wastegate linkage is touching the oil drain from the turbo. Is this typical?

Yes, I do realize I will find out as soon as I load the engine up enough to open the wastegate. But if i need to pull the turbo back off to modify it I would prefer to do it before my exhaust is finished.

Could you take a picture? Is the cartridge clocked correctly?

I will get a pic tonight.

I clocked it so the oil drrain on the turbo was square with the oil drain flange to the engine. I looked at how I could clock it differently, but it really doesn't matter as the drain is only going to mount one way and the waste gate is mounted to the exhaust housing which is solid to the manifold. the only thing you will change is the angle of the drain port, it will not change the distance between the tube and the linkage.

other then grinding down the linkage, or adding a sleeve so the nut is farther away, I am not sure what to do, feels like it will have about 1/8" of travel before the nut hits the tube, I think I will hit the wastegate with shop air tomorrow and see what is does.

BUT I am mostly curious as to what the hell is the difference on my truck if no one has ever had this issue before.

Thats a heck of a predicament. I've never used any BD Chargers Besides a Supermax (iirc) kit for a duramax. I agree with the shop air idea, and I'm hoping for your sake that it the actuator travel is just below the contact point. If not you've got to wonder what happened there. it would be rough to get a wrench on it there to adjust it.

I had the same thing, I just used a small pry bar I had and bent the wastegate rad slightly. I even think the the install instructions from BD it mentioned the same thing about slightly bending the wastegate rod.

Nothing in the instructions about bending it, or even adjusting it for that matter, atleast I will be able to adjust it right @ 45 psi by checking it. I don't think its possible to adjust it with it still on the truck any way, BD says 2 psi for every rotation. other then the wastegate not opening, I also concerned with it opening and then not being able to close again. I won't have all my tubing to finish my exhaust until friday so I have time to play with it before I'm driving with it.

I'll let you kow what i find/ do. I am going to contact BD now that I have pictures.

oudive, thanks I checked BD's website, and it does mention bending the wastegate linkage, I must have overlooked that, or the newer version doesn't include that part.

BD instructions:

Connect the oil drain tube to the bottom of the turbo using the supplied gasket and the original hardware. You will need to slide the oil drain adapter as far as possible away from the wastegate arm to prevent any contact. In some rare cases the wastegate arm may need to be bent.

I guess I'll be pulling it off to give it a nice arc in it.

Yes in some cases the stack up of tolorances can make it a tight fit, if you do as mentioned you will be fine. If you have any questions drop me a line

there is no possible way it would fit without hitting the oil drain, I have gained about 1/16th of clearance over what I had, the waste gate has full travel now, but still rubs the oil drain line. Not to mention there is no possible way to adjust the wastegate without removing the oil drain line?

If the wastegate hangs up, I am treating the drain tube to a ball peen diet, but even then without pinching the oil line completely closed, you cannot adjust the wastegate without removing the drain line.

bending the wastegate rod is a half assed solution...

Mark the drain tube and have it notch and welded so that there is room from the gate to travel. That is how I have done them.
Note: I took it to someone that new how to weld.

I'm not into bending the rod either.
