24v to 12v swap?

I'm thinkin about changing out my 1999 24v with a 1997 12v with the Bosch injector pump. I originally wanted a 12v model truck but got such a great deal on my truck, I couldn't pass it up. I will need to change out the engine no matter what, or at least do a rebuild, so I was going to go with the engine I originally wanted.
I'm looking for any and all good input. I won't need the computer with the 97 engine correct? As far as I know it'll run as a purely mech. engine. Is there anything I'd need to alter in the wiring harness?

You will have to provide power to the fuel solenoid on the p pump. The pickup for the tach is different also. I believe the 24 valve uses cam sensors and the 12 valve uses a pickup on the crank. The sending units for the 24 valve should just be able to thread into the 12 valve block for your gauges, tho. Hope this helps

what are u use the truck for? do u have a 12v motor already? i would rebuild the 24v motor and p pump it! best of both worlds!... the fuel and rpm u need and the airflow from the 24v:tu:

Hey, im in the process of putting a 92 12v in my 01 24v. The issue im having as well is with the tach. If i put the 24 v cam sensor into the 92, will it make the right pattern to run the tach?

I would definitely do a P-pump swap on your 24 valve. That way you have the best of both worlds :tu:

Nope, you can't do that. Your 24v cam has a 35 tooth gear on the back that the sensor reads (picks up on) plus there's no hole in the block for the sensor either. You can use a couple other methods though. One being the front sensor from the mid 90s that read off of the harmonic balancer. You'd need the balancer also cause it has a groove machined in it for the pick-up to read. My son has been telling me about one that sounds both cheap and interesting. It uses an alternater probe to get a tach reading. everything, including the gauge is about 120 bucks. The only drawback I saw from what he told me was the tach itself is the 2 1/16 size, the normal boost, oil press, ect. gauge size, but it seems really painless, simple and reliable. I don't remember the company, but it shouldn't be hard to look up if I don't see him for a couple days.
Good Luck Buddy!!
( OOPS, the gauge is 2 5/8" )

OK, it's an Autometer gauge and probe set-up go here to see the wiring installation http://www.autometer.com/productPDF/608.pdf

So just curious, whats wrong with the 24v motor ?:c:

I went to a couple dealer I use with good prices, then I checked out Amazon.com
You can get it for anywhere form 126.00+ 10.00 shipping up to about 180.00+ shipping.
Go to Amazon for the best price, type in Autometer 2888 anywhere you check if your interested. The guage comes with the clamp-on pick-up..........Whew, I'm done! Oh, one more thing, the tach can be calibrated to make up for diff. size alternator pulleys and so on. Which was my main concern when my son first told me about it. :c:
